NiJaree Canady, the standout player for the Texas Tech Red Raiders softball team, has been named the most intriguing person in college softball for the 2026 season. This recognition comes from The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson, who highlights Canady’s impact on the sport and her potential to lead the Red Raiders to a national title.

Canady was previously ranked at the top of similar lists last year, and there’s no indication that this will change. Her performance last season was nothing short of impressive, as she nearly led the Red Raiders to a national championship. If Canady and Texas Tech manage to secure the title this year, it could create a competitive race for Indiana football’s “worst-to-first” crown.

A Star on the Rise

Canady has already garnered significant attention as the season approaches. She has been recognized as the top player in the country by Softball America and D1 Softball. Additionally, she is a Preseason First-Team All-American and is listed on the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List. These accolades underscore her status as one of the most promising athletes in collegiate softball.

Key Players Supporting the Team

Two transfer pitchers and utility players, Kaitlyn Terry and Desirae Spearman, have also made a strong impression. They are positioned at the second spot on the list, with Carlson noting their potential to be crucial to the Red Raiders’ national title aspirations. Terry, coming from UCLA, and Spearman, from New Mexico, are expected to take some of the pressure off Canady, allowing her to remain fresh during the postseason.

In addition to Terry and Spearman, the team includes returning senior Chloe Riassetto and sophomore Samantha Lincoln. Both are left-handed pitchers. Riassetto pitched 98.2 innings last season with a 2.48 ERA, while Lincoln recorded a 3.50 ERA across 72.0 innings.

Head coach Gerry Glasco, who is ranked at No. 9 on the list, has played a vital role in the program’s success. Carlson praised his efforts in bringing in what she calls the greatest transfer class in the sport’s history. Updated 2026 Softball Schedule

Texas Tech has made several adjustments to its schedule for the first two weekends of the regular season. The Red Raiders will now play North Texas at 11 a.m. on Feb. 6 in Lake Charles, La., and will face Louisiana Monroe at 1:30 p.m. as part of McNeese State’s Twisted Vines Invitational.

Another change involves the game against Texas A&M on Feb. 7, which has been moved to 4:30 p.m., and the Red Raiders will now play Providence in the 7 p.m. time slot in College Station.

National Televised Games

The team will also feature in two nationally televised games this season. The first is against BYU on April 3 in Lubbock, airing on FS1 at 6 p.m. The second is the regular season finale against Baylor on May 2 at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN, also in Lubbock.
