On Sunday afternoon at UFC 325, the New South Wales native successfully defended his featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Diego Lopes. The victory was a testament to Volkanovski’s mastery, as he secured the win with all three judges scoring the fight 49-46, 49-46, and 50-45.

The crowd at Sydney Olympic Park erupted in celebration as Volkanovski (29-4-0) showcased his signature precision and footwork. His performance was even more dominant than his previous victory over Lopes at UFC 314 in Miami.

“I was ready for him to make the right adjustments; his team did a good job,” Volkanovski said. “Last time, we moved to the right, and he did a great job of cutting that off. But that just means I’m going to use all my other tools.”

Volkanovski, who is 37 years old, admitted that he would have preferred not to have to go the full 25 minutes against his younger opponent. “I wanted to grab a hold of him and put him down, but he was strong. I didn’t want to stand for 25 minutes, I’ll be honest. But we got the job done.”

The first round was relatively uneventful, with both fighters using a lot of feints. However, the second round saw the action pick up significantly. Volkanovski attempted a jumped guillotine that Lopes narrowly escaped, and later tried a rear-naked choke at the end of the round.

In the third round, both fighters landed massive right hands. Volkanovski’s double-right hand staggered Lopes, while Lopes’ quick strike briefly dropped Volkanovski to his knees.

With this win, Volkanovski tied Jose Aldo for the most title fight victories in UFC featherweight history, with eight wins. He reflected on his journey, mentioning his previous loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 in Perth. “I almost had my moment in Perth,” he said. “But I got my moment here in Sydney.”

In the co-main event, No. 8 lightweight Benoit Saint Denis (17-3-0) extended his winning streak to four straight victories. He secured a technical knockout of No. 6 Dan Hooker (24-14-0) at the 4:45 mark of the second round. Saint Denis used a relentless ground-and-pound attack, including several brutal elbows, before finishing with a series of punches.
