The Oregon Ducks’ Journey to the Top

The Oregon Ducks have been on a remarkable journey in recent years, coming close to achieving their first national title. Since Dan Lanning took over as head coach in 2022, the team has consistently made waves in the college football landscape. However, despite their success, they have yet to break through and claim the ultimate prize.

In 2023, the Ducks narrowly missed out on making the four-team College Football Playoff. Then, in 2024 and 2025, they were seeded as the No. 1 and No. 5 teams in the 12-team CFP, respectively. Yet, each year, they have faced teams that either won the national championship or made it to the title game. This pattern has continued, with the Ducks being eliminated by the last two national champions in blowout fashion.

Facing the Champions

The most recent example of this trend came when the Indiana Hoosiers defeated the Miami Hurricanes on Monday night. This victory placed the Hoosiers in the Peach Bowl, where they went on to defeat the Ducks in a decisive manner. Prior to that, in 2024, the Ohio State Buckeyes had also beaten the Ducks in the Rose Bowl, another loss to a national champion.

Looking at Lanning’s record since taking over, the Ducks have an impressive 48-8 overall record through four seasons. However, six of those eight losses have come against teams that either reached the national championship game or won the title outright. Four of these losses were to the actual national champions.

A Pattern of Near Misses

The 2023 season was particularly heartbreaking for the Ducks. Led by Bo Nix, the team lost to the rival Washington Huskies in mid-October. They had a chance to redeem themselves in the PAC-12 championship, but again, they fell short, losing to Washington by just three points. This loss not only ended their hopes for the conference title but also cost them a spot in the four-team CFP.

The 2022 season also followed a similar pattern. Although the Ducks lost to the national championship winner, they also suffered other losses that ultimately led to a one-point victory in the Holiday Bowl.

A New Beginning

Lanning’s first game as the Ducks’ head coach was against the Georgia Bulldogs, the team he had previously worked for as a defensive coordinator. The game took place at a neutral site, but given the proximity of Atlanta to Athens, it felt more like a home game for Georgia. The Bulldogs dominated the Ducks, winning 49-3. They went on to finish the season undefeated, culminating in a 65-7 victory over TCU in the national title game.

With this loss included, plus the recent defeat to Indiana, four of Lanning’s eight losses at Oregon have come to the national title winner. Six of his eight losses have come to teams that appeared in the national title game. If we exclude the 2022 season, which included losses to No. 25 Washington and No. 21 Oregon State, the Ducks have faced teams that competed for the title in each of the past three years.

Building Toward Greatness

Despite these setbacks, Lanning has built one of the top programs in the country in just four years. However, the Ducks have struggled to break through, whether it be due to two consecutive blowout losses in the CFP or losing six of eight games in the past four years to teams that played for the title.

This is a common challenge for many programs on their path to becoming national champions. For example, Ohio State faced similar hurdles before winning the title in 2024. They lost in the CFP Semifinal to the Bulldogs in 2022 and then lost to Michigan in 2023, which led to their exclusion from the playoff.

Looking Ahead

Considering Oregon’s recent performances and the return of key players such as Dante Moore, Evan Stewart, and the entire starting defensive line, along with several talented transfers, next season looks promising. It could be the year the Ducks finally break their streak of losing to the eventual national champion.
