Coach Dave Canales Refuses to Blame Officials for Panthers’ Loss

NFL fans were left frustrated after the Carolina Panthers suffered a 16-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday. Several questionable calls during the game sparked debate among fans, who felt the Panthers were on the receiving end of poor officiating. However, Panthers head coach Dave Canales took a different approach, choosing not to blame the referees for the team’s defeat.

During his press conference, Canales emphasized that the loss was due to the team’s own shortcomings rather than any external factors. “I did. I don’t really want to get into that, because we just didn’t play well enough offensively speaking,” he said. “We didn’t get our run game going. A bad day on third down, which doesn’t give us an opportunity to extend the drives and really have a balanced offense the way that we can play.”

Canales pointed out several areas where the Panthers struggled. The team was held to just 19 rushing yards, converted only eight of 15 third downs, and committed three turnovers, including two in Buccaneers’ territory. Despite these challenges, the coach maintained that the responsibility lay with the players and their execution.

Controversial Penalty Calls Spark Debate

While Canales focused on the team’s performance, there were several moments during the game that raised questions about the officiating. One such instance occurred on a first-and-10 from the Buccaneers’ 34-yard line with 11:45 remaining in the third quarter. Quarterback Bryce Young attempted a backward pass to running back Rico Dowdle, who dropped the ball. The officials initially ruled it an incomplete pass but later changed the call to a “backward pass that went out of bounds.” However, the ball never appeared to go out of bounds, and the ruling cost the Panthers a chance to gain some yardage.

“I spoke with them,” Canales said when asked about the play. “They’re not going to overturn that call live. But I spoke with them right after it happened. I just wanted to know, ‘What did you see and what was the call?’”

Another controversial call came on the Panthers’ next offensive possession, when an offensive pass interference penalty against rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan negated a 32-yard completion from Young to McMillan. This play ultimately stalled the drive and forced the Panthers to punt.

Frustrations with Officials Surface

Canales, while maintaining a professional demeanor during the press conference, admitted that frustrations with the officials had surfaced during the game. Broadcast cameras captured him mouthing the words “he tripped” to line judge Walter Flowers after a defensive pass interference call against cornerback Nick Scott in the third quarter.

Despite this, Canales chose not to dwell on the officiating, instead focusing on the team’s need to improve. “Some missed opportunities out there, so it really just has to be on us and about the execution and making sure we’re in the right places at the right time,” he said.

NFC South Fate Now Depends on Falcons-Saints Game

With the loss, the Panthers’ hopes of clinching the NFC South were dashed. They now await the outcome of the Atlanta Falcons versus New Orleans Saints game, as the division title will come down to a tiebreaker. If the Falcons win, the Panthers will claim the division via a three-team tiebreaker. However, if the Saints win, the Buccaneers will take the title thanks to their better record against common opponents.

“I think we’re all going to be on the edge of our seats tomorrow watching that game hoping for the outcome,” Canales said. “Hoping for the Falcons to pull through.”
