When it comes to the Alexander Bulldogs, the focus has often been on their explosive offensive capabilities. However, in their district opener against Medina Valley, it was the defense that stole the show, leading the team to a decisive 66-47 victory. This win not only marked the start of their district play but also showcased the depth and resilience of the Bulldogs.

A Challenging Start for Alexander

Alexander entered the game with high expectations, knowing they would face a tough opponent in Medina Valley. “Our defense was outstanding in the second half,” Rodriguez said. “That is what really won the game. We can score, but it’s our defense that separates us from everyone else. We are long and athletic, and our guys understand their roles. When we play hard defense, it’s hard to score on us.”

Senior Emilio Garcia led all scorers with 21 points, but his impact extended beyond just scoring. Garcia relentlessly pressured Medina Valley’s guards, forcing turnovers and disrupting the Panthers’ offensive sets. His hustle resulted in a five-second violation late in the third quarter, further swinging momentum toward Alexander.

A Comfortable Lead by the Third Quarter

By the end of the third quarter, the Bulldogs had built a comfortable cushion, outscoring Medina Valley 18-6 in the period. This dominance continued into the fourth quarter, where Serna made perhaps his biggest contribution by taking a charge early in the final period, halting any chance of a Panthers rally.

Alexander remained composed down the stretch, executing defensively and sharing the ball offensively as the lead continued to grow. The Bulldogs’ depth allowed them to maintain pressure without sacrificing energy, while Medina Valley struggled to generate clean looks against Alexander’s length.
