A Challenging Season for Jared McCain

This season has been particularly tough for sophomore guard Jared McCain. After missing nearly an entire calendar year due to a series of injuries, he made a triumphant return with the Philadelphia 76ers. However, it’s clear that the rust from his time away has made it difficult for him to find his footing within the team.

McCain’s court time has increased in recent games, but he still hasn’t found his rhythm on offense. In 19.2 minutes per game, he’s averaging just 7.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists while shooting a dismal 35.5% from the field and 31.7% from beyond the arc. These numbers are far below what one would expect from a player who was once seen as a key piece of the puzzle.

The Message from the 76ers

Beyond the statistics, the 76ers have been sending a clear message to McCain that he can’t afford to ignore. Head coach Nick Nurse and the coaching staff have started using him in a different way this season, and the trends suggest a decrease in the level of trust placed on the young guard.

McCain has always been known as a scorer, but during his rookie season, he showed enough passing ability to make people believe he could eventually take on a lead guard role. However, it seems the 76ers are not ready to hand him the keys to the offense just yet.

Positional Adjustments and Usage Rates

Out of the 10 most-used lineups featuring McCain so far this season, seven have him playing alongside Tyrese Maxey. The 76ers have primarily used him as a shooting guard, although the shift goes beyond just his position on the court.

His usage rate, which was at 24.7% last season, has dropped to 19% this campaign. The team is clearly not trusting him with the ball as much as before. While this could be attributed to the team being more cautious with his usage after his injury, there are other factors that may be contributing to this change in strategy.

New Talent and Competition

Philly now has VJ Edgecombe joining their trio of established stars. This means there’s no real reason for the coaching staff to give McCain a lot of freedom for individual creation, which is where he excels. It seems that McCain’s current role will remain unchanged moving forward, raising the question: what can he do to regain his place in the team’s hierarchy?

What Needs to Change

Improving his shooting percentage would be a good start, as well as making better decisions when handling the ball. However, until he returns to the level he was at during his rookie season, it’s hard to see how McCain can have the impact that many expected, even after his injury.

The Ball is in His Hands

Despite the challenges, the ball is still in McCain’s hands. The question remains: what will he do with it? Only time will tell if he can reclaim his spot in the pecking order and prove that he’s ready to take on a larger role within the 76ers’ offense.
