Nebraska’s football program has been actively seeking ways to strengthen its offensive lineup, and one of the most promising targets currently under consideration is Kwazi Gilmer, a wide receiver from UCLA. While the Huskers did not achieve the level of production they hoped for from their wide receiver core this season, head coach Dana Holgorsen is now looking to bring in a proven Big Ten pass-catcher to bolster the team’s depth.

Gilmer, who spent the past two seasons with the Bruins, emerged as one of the top receivers in the conference. This fall, he led UCLA in receiving yards and touchdowns, making him one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal. With multiple Power Four schools reportedly interested in his commitment, securing his interest will be a challenging task for Nebraska.

The Huskers are currently in the conversation, and Gilmer is scheduled to visit Lincoln in the coming days. This move signals that Nebraska is seriously considering the possibility of adding him to their roster. However, obtaining his commitment may come at a high cost, both in terms of competition and potential playing time. With Nebraska focusing on strengthening its lines of scrimmage this offseason, the recruitment pitch for Gilmer will likely revolve around how well he fits into the program and the opportunities he would have to play rather than financial incentives.

After 24 games with UCLA, Gilmer made the decision to enter the transfer portal following the New Year’s Day game. Over his career, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound receiver has accumulated 880 yards and six touchdowns on 81 receptions. With two years of eligibility remaining, Gilmer represents an attractive addition due to his ability to impact the game for several more seasons.

Currently, Nebraska already has two experienced wide receivers on its roster for 2026: Nyziah Hunter and Jacory Barney. Adding a third veteran receiver who has proven himself within the Big Ten would significantly enhance the Huskers’ wideout group. All three players would be juniors next season, providing room for continued growth into 2027.

The Huskers also have an existing relationship with Gilmer. As a high school recruit, Nebraska offered him a scholarship in May 2023, though he did not take a visit at the time. Now, the program is leveraging the progress it has made to bring him back to Lincoln for a visit.

Although Gilmer did not play for Nebraska, his production came within the Big Ten. If he were to join the Huskers, Holgorsen would enter the 2026 season with three wideouts capable of serving as WR1s, each with over 880 receiving yards in their collegiate careers.

At UCLA, Gilmer had a standout sophomore season, becoming the team’s go-to target. He recorded 50 receptions for 535 yards and four touchdowns. His numbers would have placed him at the top of the Huskers’ receiving chart this fall and second in total yardage.

While the recruitment process is still ongoing, Gilmer’s interest in Nebraska indicates that the program is not backing down from adding offensive talent. Additionally, reports suggest that the Huskers are close to finalizing their next quarterback, and Holgorsen is determined to surround his starting signal-caller with the necessary talent to succeed.

This focus extends beyond the quarterback position. The Huskers have also been actively recruiting offensive line talent, with 11 transfer portal targets confirmed for visits as of January 3. The program appears committed to addressing its offensive line issues, which have long hindered its performance.

Gilmer is the only confirmed wideout target linked to Nebraska so far, and the staff is expected to make a strong push to secure his commitment before he leaves campus. He is expected to arrive in Lincoln as early as January 5, and the Huskers seem to be making him a priority in their search.

Other wideouts on the roster include Cortez Mills, Keelan Smith, and Quinn Clark, all of whom saw limited roles this season. However, Gilmer’s recruitment suggests that the coaching staff is more inclined to add another experienced receiver rather than rely on younger players who may not yet be ready to contribute consistently.

The Huskers’ offense struggled this season, largely due to inconsistent play up front. Although the team showed signs of improvement as the season progressed, they will need to replace their starting quarterback, running back, one wide receiver, and three offensive linemen before the 2026 season begins.

If Gilmer joins the program, Holgorsen would have one of the most complete wide receiver rooms in recent memory. While the current group has shown promise, the priority remains improving pass blocking before the next season.

Nebraska fans have grown accustomed to watching offensive line struggles limit the team’s potential. Whether this staff can finally address those issues over the offseason will be a key factor in determining the success of Rhule’s fourth year.

For now, the list of visiting prospects is impressive. However, the ultimate goal is to seal the deal and see if these players can translate their skills into success on the field at Memorial Stadium.
