Flyers End Losing Streak with 2-1 Victory Over Vegas

The Philadelphia Flyers ended their six-game losing streak with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. The win also came at the expense of the Golden Knights, who saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end.

After allowing at least five goals in their previous five games, the Flyers displayed strong defensive play, allowing just one goal for the first time since Sam Ersson stopped 20 of 21 shots against the Chicago Blackhawks on December 23. This performance marked a significant shift in the team’s fortunes.

The game was filled with tension and key moments, especially in the final minutes. With just 1 minute, 33 seconds left in regulation, Owen Tippett was called for a delay of game penalty. This gave the Golden Knights a chance to tie the game, but the Flyers held firm. Nick Seeler made a crucial block on Shea Theodore, and Sam Ersson stopped a slap shot by Jack Eichel with only 23 seconds remaining. Pavel Dorofeyev had multiple shot attempts in the final flurry, but he was blocked twice by Cam York and Travis Sanheim.

Konecny Shines with Two Goals

Travis Konecny was the hero for the Flyers, scoring both goals in the victory. His first goal came 3:46 into the game, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead. He then added another goal in the third period, this time while shorthanded.

Konecny’s second goal was a result of a similar play, where he found himself in a breakaway after intercepting a pass from Jack Eichel. He beat Adin Hill glove side initially, but then switched to blocker side for the second goal. When asked if he changed tactics, Konecny joked, “No, that’s just more about, I’m just trying to mess with his head a little bit.”

Konecny’s connection with Hill is personal, as he spends his summers in Calgary, where Hill grew up. The two even won gold together at the 4 Nations Face-Off last February.

Strong Performance by Ersson

Sam Ersson was instrumental in the Flyers’ victory, making several key saves throughout the game. His first goal came 42 seconds after he made a spectacular save on Alexander Holtz. Ersson’s Swedish countryman had a tip-in chance off a centering pass by Cole Reinhardt, but Ersson read the play perfectly and stopped Hertl from the bumper during a power play.

In his 18th start of the season, it was the fifth first period this year where Ersson did not allow a goal. In the second period, he received help from Nick Seeler, who made a fantastic play on a two-on-one situation. Skating alone after Noah Juulsen pinched, Seeler stayed up and knocked the puck away from Mark Stone.

Penalty Kill and Power Play

The Flyers’ penalty kill, which had struggled during their losing streak, looked strong in the first three power plays for the Golden Knights. However, the NHL’s fourth-best power play (26.5%) eventually struck on the fourth opportunity. Hertl, making up for an earlier mistake, deflected in a shot-pass by Eichel past Ersson.

Ersson finished the game with 24 saves out of 25 shots, earning his first win since December 23.
