A New Era in College Football Recruiting

While a few schools are still finalizing their 2026 portal recruiting, the immediate focus has shifted to the 2027 class for many programs. This shift is especially significant for schools with new coaches, as the 2027 high school class represents their first opportunity to make a strong impression in the competitive world of college football recruiting.

A Top Prospect Takes Advantage of Favorable Conditions

While much of the country is dealing with harsh weather over the weekend, one of the nation’s top prospects took advantage of an area that hasn’t been affected by these conditions. This prospect used the opportunity to conduct a visit, and at the same time, one of the rising stars in the SEC is making a move to secure a big recruiting season.

An Impressive Visit for Hiller

Maxwell Hiller, a Pennsylvania offensive lineman, recently visited Florida. The Gators and new head coach Jon Sumrall made a strong impression on Hiller during his visit. His post-visit comments indicate a growing interest in Florida as a serious contender in his recruitment. Sumrall told On3sports’s Chad Simmons that Florida “did everything right” and that “the visit was amazing.”

Hiller is a five-star recruit, ranked by 247sports as the nation’s No. 4 overall prospect and the top interior lineman in the 2027 national recruiting class. Standing at 6’5″ and weighing 300 pounds, Hiller’s athleticism is impressive enough to have already earned him a basketball offer from Division I La Salle. He hails from Pennsylvania and has been the center of attention from top college football programs.

In recent days, Hiller has entertained visits from Georgia and Clemson, two of the many schools vying for his commitment. Given his Pennsylvania roots, Penn State is also a likely candidate in his recruitment. Hiller has taken unofficial visits to State College and to Alabama last fall and has a summertime visit planned for South Carolina.

Florida’s Recruiting Efforts

Currently, Florida has only one commitment for the 2027 class. Earlier this week, in-state cornerback Amare Nugent (a four-star recruit) pledged to the Gators.

The Gators added five offensive linemen to the 2026 class, but none of them were ranked above three stars by 247sports. The Gators will need to bolster an offensive line that struggled at times in 2025. The team had trouble running the ball (ranking 12th in the SEC) and experienced inconsistent returns in the passing game with quarterback DJ Lagway.

At this moment, Hiller is the only five-star interior lineman in the 2027 recruiting class nationally. Five interior linemen are ranked among 247’s top 100 players in the class. Of these five, only one has made a commitment, as Kaeden Perry, who is ranked second at the position behind Hiller and 13th overall, has committed to Oklahoma. Sumrall and Florida have plenty of competition in the battle for Hiller, but they’ve certainly made their presence known.
