The Need for a Point Guard Upgrade

During the Minnesota Timberwolves’ five-game losing streak, it has become increasingly clear that Anthony Edwards needs support in the backcourt. Despite being a combo guard, DiVincenzo has been assisted on a large number of his field goals, with Julius Randle providing 53 of them. Over 61% of his field goals this season have been assisted, and over 92% of his three-pointers have come off assists. Given these factors, there is a clear need for the Timberwolves to address their point guard situation before the trade deadline.

• Ja Morant: The Memphis Grizzlies’ point guard is a top target, known for his scoring ability and flair. However, his off-court issues make him a risky choice.

• Coby White: A hybrid guard who is more of an on-ball playmaker, White averages 18.8 points per game. His defensive discipline is a concern, though.

• Tre Jones: A traditional point guard with strong passing abilities, Jones has averaged double figures in points in three of the last four seasons. However, his three-point shooting is subpar.

• Jose Alvarado: A tenacious defender with a knack for creating steals, Alvarado could be a good fit for the Wolves. However, his injury history is a drawback.

• Collin Sexton: An efficient volume scorer, Sexton is a true team player and has improved as a facilitator. His defensive capabilities are also notable.
