The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team has shown signs of progress at the beginning of SEC play, but they will need to wait for a chance to settle the score with their fierce rivals.

In a closely contested game at the Moody Center on Saturday, Texas A&M overcame a slow start and dominated the second half to secure a 74-70 victory over Texas. This win ended the Longhorns’ two-game winning streak and highlighted the challenges that lie ahead in their conference schedule.

Rylan Griffen was instrumental for the Aggies, scoring all 17 of his points in the second half. Rashaun Agee contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds, marking the first time Texas A&M has defeated Texas in Austin since 2002.

Defensive Struggles

Texas’ defense struggled to match the intensity it displayed in the first half. The Aggies shot 6 of 10 from beyond the arc and 15 of 25 from the field in the second half, while Texas failed to replicate its earlier defensive efforts.

Jordan Pope and Dailyn Swain each scored 17 points, and Matas Vokietaitis added 14 points and nine rebounds. Tramon Mark contributed 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists.

Pope started the scoring with an open three-pointer, but the Aggies quickly tightened their defense, limiting Texas to few easy opportunities. Texas A&M employed a relentless full-court press and tight halfcourt defense, leading to a significant offensive drought for the Longhorns.

During this stretch, Texas went nearly six minutes without scoring, and Texas A&M capitalized with a 7-0 run. Vokietaitis ended the drought with a free throw, and Camden Heide sparked a response with a corner three-pointer followed by a running layup from Mark.

Despite the slump, Texas led 15-14, but Agee quickly answered with a basket to put the Aggies back in front 16-15 at the 7:29 mark. The Longhorns gradually found their rhythm, with Vokietaitis going on a personal 6-0 run before Mark hit a buzzer-beating triple to tie the game at 29 at halftime.

Second Half Dominance

After the break, Texas A&M found their groove offensively. Griffen hit three quick threes, including a four-point play, and Agee converted an and-one to give the Aggies a 10-point lead at 44-34. This run served as a catalyst for the Aggies, who maintained control throughout the remainder of the game.

Although Pope made some key shots for Texas, the Longhorns never led in the second half. Texas A&M’s hot shooting from beyond the arc and effective back cuts on the baseline proved too much for Texas to handle.

The Longhorns will now head on the road to face the Kentucky Wildcats on Wednesday in Lexington. With momentum on their side, they’ll look to regroup and build on their recent successes.
