A New Chapter for Terry Smith

Terry Smith, Penn State’s associate head coach, found himself in an unexpected position during the 2025 season when he was appointed as the interim head coach following the departure of James Franklin. This sudden change came with its own set of challenges and emotions.

“When I started walking down the hallway, he came out and around the corner, and I just saw something different in him, and right then my stomach just started turning,” Smith recalled. “They explained what was happening, and they explained what was about to be announced, and they wanted me to be the interim head coach.”

Smith admitted that the pressure was overwhelming at first. “Emotions were running a to z, some nervousness,” he said. “I don’t think for the next two days that I slept after that.” The weight of the responsibility was heavy, and Smith acknowledged the pressure he felt. “Yeah! I felt the pressure. They say pressure is for the person unprepared. Well, I wasn’t prepared for that because I didn’t see it coming.”

Despite the initial struggles, Smith used the experience to grow as a coach. Facing three formidable Big Ten opponents and suffering three consecutive losses, he learned from each challenge. “Like we teach our players, learn from it. If you watch me from the first week at Iowa to the last week at the Pinstripe Bowl, I’ve gotten a ton better,” he said.

Leadership and Team Unity

Smith’s leadership had a positive impact on the team. “Giving a little bit more of each other, and we bought into it. The players bought into it, the staff bought into it,” he said. This unity led to three consecutive victories, which were crucial for the team’s morale.

One of the most significant moments came against Nebraska, where the team achieved a major victory. “It’s a great moment for me, my family…gosh I said I wasn’t going to do that,” Smith said during a post-game interview. Reflecting on the emotional moment, he added, “Yeah, it’s just gratitude.”

The team also triumphed over Clemson University in the Pinstripe Bowl, another milestone that brought tears to Smith’s eyes. This success was not just a win on the field but also a personal achievement for Smith.

A Legacy of Loyalty and Future Aspirations

Smith, a 1991 Penn State alum, has a deep connection to the university. His family has a long history of attending Penn State, and this bond continues to influence his work. Now, as associate head coach alongside newly hired head coach Matt Campbell, Smith is optimistic about the future.

“He is a dynamic coach that is going to take us to the next generation of Penn State greatness,” Smith said. He believes that Campbell will bring new energy and direction to the program.

Smith’s dedication to Penn State is evident in his recruiting efforts. “It’s my number one sales pitch for recruits. I’m a testimony of what this place can do for you,” he said. He looks forward to contributing to the next chapter of Nittany Lions football, ensuring that the legacy of the program continues to thrive.
