The Green Bay Packers Face a Crucial Decision on Quay Walker

The Green Bay Packers are at a crossroads when it comes to the future of linebacker Quay Walker. The team recently declined his $14.5 million fifth-year option, which is in line with what he might expect on the open market in 2026 if he becomes an unrestricted free agent. This decision has sparked discussions about whether the Packers will re-sign him or let him walk.

Earlier this year, reports indicated that Walker’s projected value was between $12 million and $15 million per year. However, the floor price for starting linebackers has risen significantly, making the lower end of that range less likely. The Ringer recently released its list of top 40 free agents for 2026, projecting a $15 million per year contract for Walker, who was ranked 12th overall.

Other Packers players included in the list were left tackle Rasheed Walker (7th) and backup quarterback Malik Willis (25th). Despite these projections, the Packers are facing financial constraints in 2026. Even after releasing center Elgton Jenkins and defensive end Rashan Gary to create cap space, the team is expected to have little room to maneuver.

The Packers may also choose to wait until 2027 to use their line of credit, as the cap hits for their top players will increase dramatically over the next two seasons. For example, quarterbacks like Jordan Love and running backs such as Josh Jacobs will add significantly to the cap in 2027, making it even more challenging to retain key players.

Re-signing Walker would be a tight squeeze, but the league’s compensatory pick system may encourage the Packers to keep their own players rather than sign outside free agents. If they lose Walker, along with other players like Malik Willis and Romeo Doubs, they could gain four picks in the fifth round (with Rasheed Walker possibly being a fourth-round pick) in 2027. Signing outside free agents could risk losing those selections, creating a double whammy for the team.

If Walker doesn’t return, the Packers may turn to Isaiah McDuffie to fill the Mike linebacker spot. While some fans hope for Ty’Ron Hopper in that role, McDuffie has had opportunities to step up when Walker has been sidelined. Over the past two seasons, McDuffie has played 1,178 regular-season defensive snaps, compared to just 77 by Hopper.

In Week 18, with the Packers likely resting starters, expect McDuffie to start at the Mike position, with Hopper playing the Will spot and practice squad call-up Jamon Johnson filling the third linebacker role. Next year, Hopper could see action as the third linebacker if Walker leaves.

Losing Walker also creates depth issues for the Packers. Running a 4-3 defense, they typically need five linebackers on the roster. With only three under contract for 2026, the team faces a significant challenge in maintaining depth at the position. This is especially critical given that the Packers are already without their first-round pick in the draft.

If the Packers are on the fence about re-signing Walker, the Week 18 game against the Minnesota Vikings could provide valuable insight. The team will evaluate McDuffie in the Mike role and decide whether to move forward with Hopper as the third linebacker. For fans watching this seemingly meaningless game, paying attention to these positions could be crucial.

Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette noted that Walker’s time in Green Bay may be coming to an end. While Walker wouldn’t comment on negotiations with the Packers, he suggested that their priorities have shifted regarding cap room.

“Probably so,” he said. “That’s up to them. I’ll do anything to be here.”
