A Heartbreaking Loss for Zay Flowers

The offseason has begun for the Baltimore Ravens, and one of their standout players, wide receiver Zay Flowers, is dealing with a deeply personal loss. According to a post on his Instagram stories, Flowers shared a heartfelt message for his grandmother, Diana, who recently passed away. “Grandma I love you, you was always proud of me and bragging on me,” he wrote. “Yo Grandboy did it and I’m glad you got to see me do it. I love you forever. Tell my Mama, Martin and Tyler I love ’em.”

Flowers, who was selected by the Ravens in the first round (No. 22 overall) of the 2023 NFL draft out of Boston College, quickly made an impact. He set franchise rookie records for receptions (77) and receiving yards (858) during his first season. Over the past two seasons, he has consistently surpassed 1,000 receiving yards, including a career-high of 86 receptions for 1,211 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2025. His performance has earned him two Pro Bowl selections.

Growing up as the 11th of 14 children in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Flowers experienced immense hardship. When he was drafted by the Ravens, he wore a necklace featuring his mother’s picture, surrounded by 14 flower petals to represent each of his siblings. The loss of his brother, Martin, in 2017, just days before a state playoff game, was another painful chapter in his life. Despite this, Flowers delivered a strong performance, recording 3 receptions for 88 yards and 1 touchdown in a 44-21 win over Glades Central.

A Promising Future with a Big Contract

Flowers’ consistent performance over his first three seasons has positioned him as one of the elite wide receivers in the NFL. This success has led to speculation about a massive contract extension this offseason. Currently, he is under a 4-year, $14 million rookie contract, but with one year remaining, he is expected to receive a significant payday.

According to Spotrac, Flowers is projected to sign a 3-year, $92.9 million contract extension. Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac noted that the Ravens are likely to pick up the fifth-year option on Flowers’ contract, which would be worth $28 million for the 2027 season. The team has until May 1st to make this decision, but Flowers currently holds a $30 million projection in their system.

However, no deal is expected to be finalized until the Ravens determine their next head coach. The team entered the 2025 season as Super Bowl favorites but struggled, finishing with an 8-9 record. They were eliminated from the postseason by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final game of the regular season. This performance led to the firing of head coach John Harbaugh after 18 seasons, with Harbaugh soon becoming the head coach of the New York Giants.
