Panthers’ Playoff Path: Scenarios & Chances to Reach the Postseason

The Unpredictable Fate of the NFC South

The NFC South has always been a division where the outcomes are as unpredictable as they are intense. This year, it’s no different. The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers find themselves in a high-stakes situation heading into Week 18, with only one goal: to win. However, the path to the playoffs has become more complex than ever before.

Prior to the Atlanta Falcons’ upset victory over the Los Angeles Rams on “Monday Night Football” in Week 17, the situation was clear-cut. The Panthers needed a win to secure a spot in the playoffs. But now, thanks to an unexpected three-way tiebreaker scenario, the Panthers no longer need a win to clinch the NFC South title.

This development has changed everything for the Panthers, who have not made the playoffs since the 2017 season when Cam Newton was still their quarterback. After years of mediocrity, Bryce Young is looking to lead the team back to the postseason, making this season a crucial one for the franchise.

Current Playoff Outlook for the Panthers

As of now, the Panthers are not in the playoffs, but they are still in the race. The Buccaneers currently hold the edge in the divisional standings, but that could change if the Falcons manage to defeat the Saints on Sunday, January 4.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the Panthers have a 40% chance of making the playoffs. That’s a significant drop from the 72% chance they had entering their Week 18 game against the Buccaneers. Despite this, there is still a path for the Panthers to reach the postseason.

Even if they lose to the Buccaneers, the Panthers could still make it if the Saints beat the Falcons. A win by the Saints would create a three-way tie at the top of the NFC South, allowing the Panthers to claim the division based on their head-to-head record against both the Buccaneers and the Falcons.

Panther Playoff Scenarios

To qualify for the playoffs, the Panthers must win the NFC South. Here’s what it will take:

  • Panthers win or tie vs. Buccaneers – This would give them the division title outright.
  • Panthers loss vs. Buccaneers AND Falcons win vs. Saints – This scenario would create a three-way tie, with the Panthers advancing due to their superior head-to-head record.

Unfortunately, the Panthers failed to secure the easiest path by losing 16-14 to the Buccaneers in Week 18. Now, they are relying on the Saints to beat the Falcons to have any chance of reaching the playoffs.

If the Saints win, the Panthers will clinch the NFC’s No. 4 seed and face the highest-seeded wild-card team, which could be the Seahawks, 49ers, or Rams. A loss would eliminate them entirely from playoff contention.

NFC South Standings

After the Panthers’ loss to the Buccaneers in Week 18, the standings look like this:

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-9)
  • Carolina Panthers (8-9)
  • Atlanta Falcons (7-9)
  • New Orleans Saints (6-10)

The Panthers entered the week with a one-game lead over the Buccaneers, but the loss allowed the Buccaneers to catch up in the standings. The Buccaneers currently have a tiebreaker advantage over the Panthers, as they have a better record in the “common games” tiebreaker.

The only way for the Panthers to regain the top spot is if the Falcons beat the Saints. This would create a three-way tie at the top, giving the Panthers a chance to advance based on their head-to-head records.

Panther and Buccaneer Schedules

Both the Panthers and the Buccaneers have finished their regular-season schedules, ending the 2025 season with an 8-9 record.

The Falcons, however, still have one game left on their schedule:

  • Week 18: vs. New Orleans Saints (6-10)
