Pros of Olaivavega Ioane

Olaivavega Ioane demonstrates a strong foundation and consistent blocking technique, especially in pass protection. His ability to frame blocks effectively is a standout trait. He possesses a solid anchor and grip stretch, allowing him to take control of rushers and maintain the pocket’s depth.

Ioane’s leg drive is notable, enabling him to create displacement at the point of attack. His vision and quick processing skills make him effective in handling second-level pressures or secondary threats when left uncovered. Additionally, his heavy hands help counter the forward charge from pass rushers.

Cons of Olaivavega Ioane

Despite his strengths, Ioane can be overly aggressive with his hands, leading to overextension and a breakdown in posture. This tendency results in him falling off blocks. While his alignments at Penn State were creative, there is little indication of positional flexibility at the professional level.

His agility in short spaces is only sufficient, often forcing him to react late. This lack of nimbleness can limit his effectiveness in tight situations.

Background

Olaivavega “Vega” Ioane hails from Graham, Washington, and began playing football later than most, not competing until high school. He was ranked as a 3-star recruit by 247Sports and initially committed to the University of Washington before enrolling at Penn State.

Ioane redshirted his true freshman season in 2022 but became a starter in 2023, making five starts. By 2024, he was a full-time starter and earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors. In 2025, he had his best season yet, recording four pressures and earning First-Team All-Big Ten and First-Team All-American accolades.

He declared for the 2026 NFL Draft with one year of college eligibility remaining.

Player Evaluation

Ioane is a well-rounded athlete with top-tier core strength, hand power, and anchor ability. He has the capability to uproot and displace defenders while also showing enough range to play in space or climb to the second level. His strength is evident when he cleanly fits his hands on opponents’ frames to erase them.

This skill is showcased in solo blocks, combinations, or when sitting down pass rushers who test him down the middle. Ioane has great grip strength and consistent punch placement and timing, allowing him to win at first contact. He remains light on his feet, sliding and mirroring in protection, and can effortlessly drop his hips to absorb power.

As a run blocker, Ioane sometimes gets overextended and eager for contact, which can betray his otherwise good spatial awareness. These instances lead to oversetting and being forced into recovery. Due to his size, his late movement skills and lateral redirection ability do not allow him to easily correct errors early in reps. While he moves well for a big-bodied blocker in short-area lateral agility moments, he is not the most nimble player in these opportunities and would benefit from more disciplined execution.

Ioane projects as an immediate starter at the NFL level at guard. He showcases strong refinement and football intellect to process games within the front or late changes to the blocking surface at the snap. He has physically matured to handle the rigors of blocking pro defenders and could be a long-term starter for a team across multiple contracts in his NFL career.
