Stark County-Area High School Sports Highlights for the Week of Jan. 12-18
Here’s a look at the top performances and results from Stark County-area high school sports during the week of Jan. 12-18. Coaches and athletic directors are encouraged to send their results to sports@cantonrep.com for inclusion in the weekly highlights.
Saturday’s Boys Basketball Highlights
Massillon 92, Ashland 72
Two Massillon players surpassed 20 points as the Tigers won at home. Jadyce Thigpen had 24 points and Gio Jackson Jr scored 23 points for Massillon. Terrion Wells and Braylon Gamble added 16 points each for the Tigers. Massillon scored 20 points or more in each quarter.
Central Catholic 54, Warren JFK 30
Jake Bowling sank six 3-pointers and had a game-high 20 points as host Central Catholic (6-7) defeated Warren JFK. Will Minor added 11 points for the Crusaders. Lance Vlacovksy also had 10 points for Central Catholic. Henry Phillips led Warren JFK with 17 points.
Waynedale 57, Central Catholic 54
Waynedale outscored Sandy Valley 11-8 in the fourth quarter to break a 46-46 tie and defeat the Cardinals on the road. Emmett Yoder led the Golden Bears with 15 points. Scoring in double figures for Sandy Valley were Caleb Deubner with 16 points, Thorn Stenger with 12 points and Drew Graybill and Gino Tozzi with 10 points apiece.
Smithville 71, Minerva 56
Owen Schick scored 17 points for Minerva but the Lions lost to visiting Smithville.
Orrville 70, Lake Center Christian 59
Noah Harper made three 3-pointers and scored 27 points but Lake Center Christian lost at Orrville. Brody Zook added 12 points and Simon Humphrey chipped in 11 points for the Tigers. Kodah Allen led Orrville with 16 points.
Saturday’s Girls Basketball Highlights
Lake 52, Louisville 35
Hayden Croyle just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds as Lake defeated host Louisville. Audrey Goebelt also had 11 points for the Blue Streaks. Ella Tillett led Louisville with 11 points. The Leopards fell behind 21-8 after the first quarter and could not recover.
Buckeye Trail 50, Malvern 48
Buckeye Trail outscored Malvern 13-8 in the fourth quarter to overcome a 3-point deficit to win on the road. Anna McVicker led Buckeye Trail with 19 points. Scoring in double figures for Malvern (10-7, 4-5) were Addy Mitchell with 19 points, Ella Debo with 13 points and Whitney Smith with 12 points.
Tusky Valley 66, Claymont 42
Tusky Valley outscored Claymont 18-2 in the third quarter to take command and never looked back in a win at Claymont. Brennen Reichman had 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Trojans. Aleah Wozniak led the Trojans with 16 points. Ava Edwards had 19 points for the Mustangs.
Lake Center Christian 60, Heartland Christian 42
Caroline Shelly made six 3-pointers and scored 24 points to give Lake Center Christian a win at Heartland Christian.
Friday’s Boys Basketball Highlights
Jackson 64, Hoover 60
Kaiden Loy made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points as the visiting Polar Bears stormed back in the fourth quarter to knock off Hoover in Federal League play. Jackson (8-5, 4-3) closed the game on a 15-2 run. Chase Maurer totaled 15 points and six rebounds and Mason Morris scored 14 points for Jackson, which shot 11-of-18 from the 3-point line and a perfect 15-for-15 from the foul line. Loy and Morris combined to go 8-of-11 from behind the arc. Brady McCann hit four 3-pointers and scored a team-high 16 points for Hoover (9-4, 5-2), which has dropped two straight games, both in the league. Connor Newell and Hunter Hershberger scored 11 points each, with Newell getting four assists and Hershberger grabbing six rebounds. Dre Martin added five assists for Hoover.
McKinley 68, Lake 48
Anthony Chavers scored 20 points and Jamar Keyes added 17 as the Bulldogs stayed perfect in the Federal League with a win at Memorial Field House. McKinley is 10-2 overall and 7-0 in the league, now holding a two-game lead on second-place Hoover and Perry. Taden Coblentz led Lake (5-9, 1-6) with 12 points while Gavin Salzwimmer had 11 and Lucas Draher 10.
Perry 55, GlenOak 46
Nico Martelli’s 21 points led the Panthers to a home win in Federal League play. Michael Haley added 12 points for Perry (7-5, 5-2), which has won six of its last seven games. Jaxson Kendrick led GlenOak (3-9, 2-5) with 12 points.
West Branch 55, Minerva 51 OT
Jeremiah Thomas scored a game-high 28 points to go with eight assists, four rebounds and three steals as the Warriors stayed undefeated in EBC play with an overtime win at home. Thomas made all 10 of his free throws. Gavin Gregory added 10 points and five rebounds for West Branch (7-5, 6-0). Rowen Hoffee led Minerva (6-7, 2-4) with 16 points and Braydon Wood added 10.
Wednesday’s Girls Basketball Highlights
Jackson 65, Green 36
Ashley Helle sunk seven 3-pointers and had a game-high 23 points to help Jackson (12-1, 8-1) defeat visiting Green (2-11, 0-9). Maddie Lepley added 12 points for the Polar Bears. Lucy Zwisler led Green with 11 points. The Bulldogs fell behind 16-8 after the first quarter and could not recover.
Perry 49, Lake 42
Katelyn Randulic made four 3-pointers and scored 19 points as Perry (7-8, 4-5) defeated visiting Lake (8-7, 5-3) in Federal League play. Lila Kleve also had 10 points for the Panthers. Scoring in double figures for the Blue Streaks were Hayden Croyle with 16 points, Savanna Horning with 12 points and Kaitlyn Josef with 10 points.
Tuesday’s Boys High School Basketball Highlights
Jackson 83, Green 57
Four Jackson (7-5, 3-3) players scored in double figures to give the Polar Bears a win on the road over Green (3-9, 0-6). The Jackson players in double figures were Kaiden Loy with 24 points, Brayden Warstler with 14 points, Mason Morris with 13 points and Chase Maurer with 11 points. Carter Buckshaw led Green with 17 points. Chase Woloschulk also had 16 points for the Bulldogs.
Perry 52, Lake 37
Nico Martelli had 17 points to help Perry (5-5, 3-2) win a Federal League game at home over Lake (5-8, 1-5). Trae Robinson chipped in 13 points for the Panthers. Logan Miller led Lake with 13 points. The Blue Streaks fell behind 32-15 by halftime and could not recover.
Monday’s Girls High School Basketball Highlights
Perry 56, Louisville 23
Lila Kleve and Alivia Randulic scored 11 points apiece to help lead Perry to a decisive win over Louisville. The Panthers led 18-4 after one quarter and were never threatened.
East Canton 50, Minerva 46
The Wizards outscored the Lions 21-8 in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind win. Kynsie Pero scored a game-high 22 points and Chelsea Barnett finished with 18 to lead East Canton. Peyton Beaumariage led Minerva with 11 points.
Additional Highlights
Norton 56, Central Catholic 51
The Panthers (11-2) didn’t have a lead until 6:44 remained and trailed by as many as 10 in the third quarter, but coach Brian Miller turned up the heat on defense and Norton upset the Crusaders (10-2) on their home floor. Once the energy switched, Norton went on a 14-6 to start the fourth quarter and erased a two-point deficit. Alivia Goff (21 points, five rebounds) led Norton’s push. Central was led by Grace Finefrock (22 points, seven rebounds), Sarah Belden (12 points, four assists) and Lilly Belden (12 points, eight rebounds).
Malvern 60, Lake Center Christian 52
Whitney Smith scored 20 points to help lead Malvern to a come-from-behind win over Lake Center Christian. Ella Debo finished with 17 points for the Hornets (9-6), who outscored the Tigers 32-21 in the second half. Freshman Caroline Shelly hit six 3s and scored 20 points to lead Lake Center. Lilly Kane added 17 points.
Edison 53, Sandy Valley 50
Edison outscored the Cardinals 14-11 in the fourth quarter and improved to 13-0. Abby Carpenter scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Wildcats. She also had a game-high six steals. Bella Meade scored 14 points and Carli Eckinger finished with 13 for Sandy Valley (9-5). Teresa Petro grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Minerva Sweeps United Local
Boys
Minerva 2,327, United Local 1,771:
Lane Hawk had a 214-224 series as Minerva beat United Local.
Girls
Minerva 1,736, United Local 1,538:
Rylan Kiltz rolled a 215-178 series to help Minerva earn a win.
