The president of Bristol Motor Speedway, Jerry Caldwell, has officially denied rumors that the NASCAR racetrack could host the 2027 NHL Winter Classic. Despite a wave of enthusiasm from sports fans, Caldwell emphasized that no negotiations have taken place for such an event.

The NHL recently held the 2026 Winter Classic at LoanDepot Park in Miami, where the New York Rangers defeated the Florida Panthers 5-1. This indoor location sparked criticism from fans, as the Winter Classic is traditionally an outdoor event. Many felt the league had strayed from its roots, but there was still hope for a return to more traditional settings.

Caldwell addressed the rumors in a statement released via FOX Sports, saying, “BMS is always interested in unique large-scale events. The reports of a scheduled event with NHL at BMS are inaccurate, but we do look forward to welcoming fans back to The Last Great Colosseum for the Food City 500 on Sun., April 12.”

Rumors and Speculation

Despite the official denial, several reports suggested that Bristol Motor Speedway might host the 2027 Winter Classic. The Nashville Predators and the Carolina Hurricanes were rumored to be the teams involved. Given that Bristol is located halfway between Nashville and Raleigh, it would have been a convenient location for fans of both teams.

This speculation was fueled by a recent baseball event held at BMS, where the Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Braves played during the last MLB season. The Speedway Classic was a historic event, though it faced delays due to heavy rain.

NHL’s Plans for the Future

While the NHL has not confirmed the 2027 Winter Classic location, commissioner Gary Bettman has hinted that the event might return to Buffalo in 2028. The inaugural Winter Classic was held in Buffalo in 2008, when the Buffalo Sabres lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Bettman was present at the Sabres’ season opener as the 2025-26 NFL campaign began. He expressed his commitment to bringing the Winter Classic back to Buffalo, stating, “I’m not making an announcement or committing to it, but we’re kind of focused on whether or not we can do it around the 20th anniversary of the original Winter Classic.”

He also mentioned that discussions have taken place about hosting an outdoor game at Highmark Stadium. “That’s something that we think would be great,” Bettman said. Although he did not confirm whether 2028 will be the year, he assured fans that the game will return to Buffalo in the future.

“We’re grateful that we did it here first,” Bettman added. “And we are going to come back, I promise.”
