Mark Fletcher Jr. has always considered South Florida his home, and he described the opportunity to play in the College Football Playoff title game at Hard Rock Stadium as a blessing. However, the Miami Hurricanes star has one major complaint about playing the game in his backyard.

Fletcher and the Hurricanes will technically be the visiting team when they face the Indiana Hoosiers on Monday in the CFP National Championship Game. Despite that, the team will be playing on home soil due to favorable scheduling, marking the program’s first title game in two decades.

The 21-year-old is excited about the significance of the stadium for him and his teammates, expecting the environment to be electric. However, during Saturday’s media day, a major issue came up — ticket prices.

“I’m definitely expecting the energy to be high. We have a lot of Hurricane fans coming down, coming out of the crib,” Fletcher said.

“I hate that the ticket pricing was so much, so we can’t have a lot of fans there. But, hey, it’s just a blessing to just even be here at home.”

Fletcher isn’t exaggerating. Secondary marketplaces are currently listing the cheapest seats just under $4,000 as of Saturday, making it difficult for many locals to attend the game. This is the Canes’ first national title game since the 2003 Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.

Despite the high ticket prices, the prospect of playing a “home” game is exciting for Fletcher and his teammates. However, the running back noted that the preparation process hasn’t changed much compared to the CFP run that saw the Hurricanes travel to College Station, Texas, for the first round before trips to the Cotton and Fiesta Bowls.

“Nothing changed but the location for us,” Fletcher said. “Our same game day, game week process is the same and the goal is always the same, and that’s to go 1-0.

“We’re just excited for this opportunity.”

Head coach Mario Cristobal said the team is treating it as much like a road game as possible. The team is staying together this week in a Miami Beach hotel, bussing back to campus in Coral Gables for practices.

“Yeah, the preparation remains the same,’ Cristobal said. “It’s a little bit of a road game mentality because we come and check into the hotel out here and then we travel back and forth.

“We just don’t have to get on a plane to do so. I don’t think that ever changes.”

That sentiment was echoed by players across the roster, including linebacker Wesley Bissainthe, also a South Florida native.

“I don’t feel like nothing has changed. We kept everything the same,” Bissainthe said. “You’ve just got to be where your feet are and attack each and every day with the right mind and right attitude, and everything takes care of itself.”
