Messi’s New Ally: Inter Miami Signs Argentine Star for 2026 MLS Season
Inter Miami Bolsters Roster with New Argentine Defender
Inter Miami has taken another step in shaping its roster for the upcoming 2026 Major League Soccer season by announcing the signing of an Argentine defender. The club confirmed the acquisition of Facundo Mura, a player who will join Lionel Messi and other key figures on the team.
The move marks a significant addition to the squad as the Herons prepare for what is expected to be a challenging campaign. In a statement released on their official website, Inter Miami CF revealed that Mura has signed as a free agent, with the contract set to run through June 2029. This development comes after weeks of speculation about the player’s potential arrival.
Mura, who previously played for Racing Club, is expected to provide additional depth to the team’s defensive options. However, the club noted that his signing is pending the receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). This clarification highlights the procedural steps required for international players to officially join MLS teams.
Filling a Key Role
Mura’s arrival is primarily aimed at filling the vacancy left by Marcelo Weigandt, whose loan ended in December before he returned to Boca Juniors. The 26-year-old right back, who has also occasionally played on the left side, will compete for a starting spot alongside Ian Fray during the 2026 MLS season.
This signing aligns with Inter Miami’s strategy of bringing in players who can create a comfortable environment for Messi. Since the summer of 2023, the club has focused on recruiting Spanish-speaking players, particularly Argentines, to support their star forward.
A Growing Argentine Presence
Currently, Inter Miami’s roster includes six Argentine players in addition to Messi. These include Gonzalo Lujan, Tomas Aviles, Rodrigo De Paul, Mateo Silvetti, and Santiago Morales, who has Argentine heritage but was born in the United States. With the addition of Mura, the number of Argentine players on the team increases further.
The club is also considering adding up to four more players, including Oscar Ustari, Rocco Rios Novo, Tadeo Allende, and Baltasar Rodriguez. Additionally, the squad features several players from other nationalities who also speak Spanish, such as Luis Suarez, Maximiliano Falcon, David Ruiz, Sergio Reguilon, and Telasco Segovia.
Mura’s First Words
Following the official announcement of his signing, Mura shared his excitement about joining Inter Miami. In a video posted on the club’s social media accounts, he expressed his happiness and eagerness to contribute to the team’s success.
“I’m very happy to join the club,” Mura said. “I’m really eager to get to work and excited about continuing to win titles.” He added, “I hope to see you all soon so we can enjoy this new year together. A big hug to everyone. Let’s go, Inter!”
Looking Ahead
As Inter Miami continues to build its roster, the focus remains on creating a strong and cohesive team that can support Messi and achieve success in the 2026 season. The addition of Mura is just one example of the club’s commitment to strengthening its defensive line and expanding its Argentine presence. With more potential signings on the horizon, the Herons are positioning themselves as a formidable force in MLS.
