The Transfer Portal is Open – What’s Next for LSU Football?

The transfer portal has officially opened, and with it comes a wave of potential changes for the LSU football program. Over the next few days, fans can expect to hear more about top prospects considering a move to Baton Rouge. As the dominoes begin to fall, the focus will be on how head coach Lane Kiffin and general manager Billy Glasscock navigate this crucial period.

Kiffin and Glasscock have built a reputation as some of the most effective recruiters in the sport, particularly during their time at Ole Miss. They were known for identifying value additions and bringing in big names. At LSU, they now have even more resources to work with, which means the Tigers are expected to make a strong push in the transfer portal.

LSU’s 2025 season didn’t meet expectations, and the roster fell short of what is typically expected from a program with such a storied history. Kiffin’s immediate goal is to restore the talent level and rebuild the team into a competitive force once again.

Here are five key areas where LSU needs to strengthen its roster through the transfer portal:

1. Quarterback

LSU needs a quarterback — and possibly more than one. Michael Van Buren is the only scholarship passer on the roster, but his future is uncertain after delivering inconsistent performances in 2025. If Van Buren decides to enter the portal, the Tigers could be left without any passers.

Even if Van Buren stays, LSU is actively looking for high-profile quarterbacks to elevate the program. Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis have a track record of building successful offenses, which should be an attractive draw for prospects aiming to boost their draft stock.

LSU has already been linked to Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt and Cincinnati’s Brenan Sorsby, two of the top transfer quarterbacks. Both players are being pursued by multiple major programs, so LSU may need to offer significant incentives to land either. If the Tigers miss out on these top targets, they may turn their attention to Ole Miss’s Trindad Chamliss.

2. Wide Receiver

The wide receiver room is in dire need of a complete overhaul. The unit struggled throughout the 2025 season, and most of the pass catchers on the roster have either entered the portal or declared for the NFL Draft.

LSU has shown interest in some of the top wide receivers in the portal, including NC State’s Terrell Anderson, who is reportedly planning to visit LSU. While Anderson would be a solid addition, the Tigers likely need more than just one transfer. It wouldn’t be surprising to see LSU bring in as many as five new wideouts to revitalize the position.

3. Offensive Line

The offensive line suffered a major exodus in recent weeks, with most of the contributors from 2025 entering the portal. This leaves the unit in a tough spot, especially with new offensive line coach Eric Wolford taking over.

Finding quality offensive linemen in the transfer portal is challenging, but it may be the only option available for LSU. The Tigers will need to find two or three high-quality linemen to stabilize the unit.

4. Defensive End

Despite losing two veteran defensive ends to the NFL, LSU’s defense remains in good shape with defensive coordinator Blake Baker returning along with much of the staff. However, the loss of Patrick Payton and Jack Pyburn creates a gap in experience.

Gabe Reliford will return, but he missed the final two months of the season due to injury. Chaz Coleman, one of the top-ranked defensive ends in the portal, is a target for LSU, and the program is reportedly making a strong push to land him.

5. Tight End

Trey’Dez Green returns as a junior and is projected to be one of the best players on the roster. However, LSU needs depth at the tight end position. Green is likely headed to the NFL after next season, so Kiffin and his staff will look for a younger player to add depth.

Additionally, LSU may seek a physical blocking tight end to complement Green’s skills as a pass catcher. This position could be a key area of focus for the Tigers in the coming weeks.
