Knicks Suffer Third Straight Loss as Maxey Leads 76ers’ Victory
Knicks Face a Challenging Streak
The New York Knicks have found themselves in an unexpected slump. After a strong start to the season, they are now experiencing their first three-game losing streak since late October. This comes after dropping both games of a back-to-back series against the Philadelphia 76ers, marking just their third and fourth home losses of the season. The Knicks’ recent performance has raised concerns about their ability to handle adversity.
Coach Mike Brown acknowledged the team’s struggles, stating that every team faces challenges during the season. “Now for us, it’s about: How do we respond? How do we come out of it?” he said. “This is a great opportunity for us to see what we’re made of while we’re going through this stretch.”
The 76ers’ Backcourt Proves Tough
The 76ers’ young and explosive backcourt, consisting of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, has been a significant challenge for the Knicks. On Saturday, Maxey scored 36 points, while Edgecombe added 26. The Knicks struggled to contain either player, as they were able to penetrate the lane and find open shots from beyond the arc.
During the game, the 76ers showed relentless energy. When the Knicks cut the deficit to nine points in the fourth quarter, Edgecombe blocked Mikal Bridges’ three-pointer and then went coast-to-coast for a dunk. Later, when the Knicks were within 12 points, Maxey hit a stepback three. Even when the Knicks got within 10 points, Edgecombe stole an inbounds pass and finished with a layup.
Bridges admitted that the Knicks lacked the second effort needed to maintain momentum. “Just the effort,” he said. “The initial effort might be there, but just making plays after — the second effort is not there.”
Injuries and Lack of Impact from Key Players
The Knicks were expected to get a boost from their top two big men, Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson, who returned from illness and load management, respectively. However, neither had a significant impact. Towns scored only two points in the first half and finished with 23, many of which came late in the game. He spent much of the night complaining to the referees, earning a technical foul in the first quarter.
Jalen Brunson led the team with 31 points, but his teammates did not provide the necessary support. Josh Hart’s absence was clearly felt, as his all-around impact and energy were missing from the lineup.
Joel Embiid, who played at Madison Square Garden for the first time since becoming a Knicks villain during the 2024 playoffs, was not at his MVP level but still managed to put up 26 points and 10 rebounds. He outperformed both Towns and Robinson on the court.

A Test of Team Unity
Brunson emphasized the importance of unity for the Knicks to overcome their current slump. “Sticking together,” he said. “Not pointing fingers, not feeling sorry for ourselves or trying to find a quick solution instead of working through it for the long term. Just have each other’s backs, I think that’s most important.”
The 76ers dominated the game, using a 9-0 run in the second quarter to pull away and building a 19-point lead by the third quarter. The Knicks made a late push in the fourth quarter but never seriously threatened a comeback, never getting closer than seven points.

Upcoming Challenges
The Knicks will face the Detroit Pistons next, who are currently the first-place team despite being without key players like Jalen Duren and Tobias Harris. However, the Knicks’ performance will likely determine the outcome of the game.
After their previous three-game losing streak, the Knicks managed to win five straight games. This upcoming matchup will serve as another test of their resilience.
Towns expressed hope that history would repeat itself. “I hope history repeats itself,” he said. “For history to repeat itself, we gotta lock in and be ready for the next game. It’s not gonna get any easier for us.”
