Isiah Thomas, known affectionately as “Zeke,” had a legendary NBA career that solidified his place among the greatest players in basketball history. As a two-time NBA champion, 12-time All-Star, and five-time All-NBA selection, he also earned the title of Finals MVP and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Family First

Thomas grew up in a challenging environment on the South Side of Chicago, where poverty and hardship were part of daily life. His journey from those streets to the NBA is a story of perseverance and determination. But for Thomas, the real measure of success came after he reached the pinnacle of his career.

Over the course of his 13-year NBA career, Thomas reportedly earned an estimated $16.6 million. Rather than using this wealth for personal gain, he chose to invest it in his family. He used every dollar to lift them out of poverty, ensuring that his nieces, nephews, children, and cousins had a better future.

“I spent all my NBA money cleaning up my family, laying the foundation so they’ll have a chance to get out of poverty,” Thomas told Forbes Magazine writer Jabari Young.

He emphasized that while not all of his family members are in the best situations, he takes pride in knowing that most of them have food on the table, a place to live, and the opportunity to pursue higher education. Many of his relatives have either graduated from college or are well on their way.

In addition to providing financial support, Thomas also offered internships at his companies to his nephews and nieces, giving them hands-on experience in the corporate world and helping them develop the skills needed to succeed.

A True Success Story

For Thomas, the true success of his career lies in what he was able to accomplish for his family. He often reflects on how close he and his family were to falling into a cycle of poverty and struggle. He credits the NBA with giving him the opportunity to change that trajectory.

“To me, that’s the success story. Not what I’ve done, but what my family is able to do now because literally, we were hanging on by a thread,” Thomas said.

He shared how his upbringing was filled with challenges, including the threat of drugs and gang violence. Every day was a choice between right and wrong, and he made the decision to stay on the right path.

A Businessman and Community Leader

After retiring from the NBA, Thomas continued to build on his success by becoming a businessman and entrepreneur. He became one of the first African-American NBA owners, serving as a part-owner and executive vice president of the Toronto Raptors in 1994.

While still playing, Thomas began investing in various ventures through his Michigan-based investment firm, Isiah Investments. He later founded Isiah International LLC, a diversified holding company with interests in waste management, recycling, finance, real estate, e-commerce, private aviation, consumer goods, and cannabis.

Thomas also made history by becoming the first African-American elected to the Chicago Stock Exchange’s board of governors. In addition to his business endeavors, he has focused on real estate development and reinvestment in distressed communities, working to create long-term economic revitalization.
