Boyle emphasized that the decision to start Johnson was not about individual recognition but rather about team dynamics. “Who’s in our starting lineup has nothing to do with our team success,” he said. “Isaiah is one of our five best players, whether he starts or not is insignificant to me.”

The Buffaloes faced challenges on the defensive end, particularly in adjusting to West Virginia’s key players. One standout performer was Treyson Eaglestaff, a transfer from North Dakota. In his four previous Big 12 games, Eaglestaff averaged 8.8 points while shooting .357 (10-for-28). However, against Colorado, he proved to be a major threat, finishing with 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting.

Boyle acknowledged the difficulty in countering Eaglestaff’s effectiveness. “Eaglestaff, who we know goes right extremely well, goes right three times in a row in the first half and scores a basket,” he said. “And part of our keys to beating West Virginia is we’ve got to know their personnel.”

• Jalin Holland: The freshman returned to the rotation after missing the previous two games due to an injury. He played 5:41 and did not score, going 0-for-2.
• Bangot Dak: The forward struggled, recording just one rebound after averaging 10.5 in the previous four games. He also went 1-for-5 from beyond the arc, lowering his season 3-point percentage to .264 (9-for-34).
• Tacko Ifaola: Freshman forward Tacko Ifaola made his first appearance in a Big 12 game, playing 4:59 after Elijah Malone faced foul trouble early in the game.
• Barrington Hargress: The point guard contributed five assists with no turnovers, improving his assist-to-turnover rate to 3.23.
