How It Happened

The Hoosiers’ path to victory was defined by strong performances from key players. Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza completed 16-of-27 passes for 186 yards. With just under 10 minutes left in the game, he converted on 4th-and-5 with a 12-yard touchdown run, putting the Hoosiers up 24-14.

In the first half, Indiana outgained Miami, 169-69, and took a 10-0 lead into the break. Mikail Kamara blocked a Hurricanes punt from deep in their own territory, and it was recovered by Isaiah Jones to give Indiana a 17-7 lead in the third quarter.

The Indiana running back duo of Roman Hemby and Kaelon Black combined for 36 carries for 139 yards. On the other side, Miami freshman running back Malachi Toney scored a 22-yard touchdown run with just under seven minutes left to cut the Hoosiers’ lead to 24-21. Junior running back Mark Fletcher Jr. added a 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, finishing with 17 carries for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

Miami senior quarterback Carson Beck finished 19-of-32 for 232 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Indiana drove down the field attempting to milk the clock but eventually had to settle for a 35-yard field goal, giving the Hurricanes a chance with 1:42 left. Jamari Sharpe intercepted Beck with 44 seconds left, sealing the victory.

A Big Ten Legacy

The Hoosiers became the third straight Big Ten team to win a national championship in the last three years, marking the first time since the 1940s that the conference achieved this feat. This victory cements the Hoosiers’ place in college football history and sets the stage for future success.
