Oklahoma’s Expansion into Arizona’s Football Scene

Nestled nearly 1,000 miles apart, the cities of Norman, Oklahoma, and Goodyear, Arizona, may seem worlds apart. However, this distance hasn’t stopped the University of Oklahoma (OU) from making a strong push to recruit talent from Desert Edge High School in Goodyear. In November, OU secured a commitment from Mikyal Davis, a defensive back from the Class of 2027. This move is part of a broader strategy that has seen the Sooners extend offers to several other players from the same school.

Among those who have received offers are:

• Yahzeen Zion, a 2027 defensive tackle
• Jalanie George, a 2028 edge rusher
• Nekhi Lambeth, a 2028 defensive back
• Jaelyn Easterling-Flores, a 2028 defensive back

Additionally, Zerek Sidney, a 2027 defensive back, was also offered by Oklahoma but ultimately chose Washington over the Sooners.

Desert Edge’s head coach, Henri MacArthur, shared insights into the relationship between the school and Oklahoma. He noted that OU head coach Brent Venables recently visited the school, following prior interactions with defensive backs coach Jay Valai and director of player personnel and retainment Stacey Ford.

“Everybody that I’ve dealt with from Oklahoma has been excellent,” MacArthur said. “They’ve all resonated with the players for sure.”

The Talent at Desert Edge

The reason for Oklahoma’s interest in these players is clear—each of them is a high-level athlete competing on a successful program. Davis, for example, is a consensus 3-star prospect and ranked No. 411 overall in the Class of 2027 according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. As a junior in 2025, he recorded impressive stats, including 36 total tackles, 22 solo tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. He chose Oklahoma over major programs like Alabama, Ohio State, and Notre Dame.

Yahzeen Zion, another 3-star prospect, stands at 6-4 and 265 pounds. He received an offer from Oklahoma on January 21 and currently holds offers from Texas A&M, Oregon, Georgia, and Texas.

Jalanie George, a 5-star recruit, is ranked No. 2 overall in the 2028 class by 247Sports. His sophomore season included 54 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, two pass deflections, two blocked field goals, and a forced fumble.

Nekhi Lambeth, a rising junior, is ranked No. 175 in the 2028 class. He posted 17 solo tackles, three pass breakups, and two interceptions during his sophomore year and has offers from Texas A&M, Kansas, and Kansas State.

Jaelyn Easterling-Flores, a 4-star prospect, plays safety and had 45 total tackles, 36 solo tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, and two pass breakups in 2025.

What Makes These Players Stand Out?

MacArthur highlighted that while each player brings unique strengths, they all share common traits: speed, athleticism, and a proven track record on the field.

“They check the boxes for the positions they play,” MacArthur said. “They’re really good football players that have the film that speaks to who they are as players.”

He also emphasized the impact of Venables’ reputation as one of college football’s top defensive minds. “Oklahoma’s been playing great defense and coach Venables is a defensive-minded head coach. I know that’s stood out to the guys, the defensive players for sure.”

Desert Edge’s Success and Oklahoma’s Ambitions

Desert Edge has established itself as one of Arizona’s top high school football programs. The Scorpions won the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Class 5A state title in 2024 and reached the quarterfinals in 2025 with an 11-1 record.

Oklahoma, meanwhile, finished the 2025 season with a 10-3 record and made its first College Football Playoff appearance since 2019. The Sooners’ success on the field has not gone unnoticed by players from Desert Edge.

“Our kids work really hard, and football’s important to them,” MacArthur said. “They want to win and compete at the highest level. Obviously, Oklahoma’s a great program that made the playoff and, you know, has set a standard of excellence.”

As Oklahoma continues to build its roster, the focus on recruiting from Desert Edge highlights the program’s commitment to finding players who can thrive in a competitive environment. With the Sooners aiming for national championship contention, the addition of these athletes could be a key factor in their future success.
