A Weekend of Redemption for the Gophers Hockey Team

When the Gophers men’s hockey season entered the last weekend of January, the team was sitting at an 8-16-1 record, far from the success that had once defined the program. However, one weekend brought a sense of normalcy back to 3M Arena at Mariucci. The Gophers delivered a strong performance, sweeping their series against No. 8 Wisconsin with an 8-4 victory on Saturday, Jan. 31, following a 4-1 win the previous night.

The game was filled with highlights and key contributions from several players. Brodie Ziemer, who scored two goals, had one of the most memorable moments of the game with a highlight-reel goal. The Gophers also showcased their power-play prowess, scoring four goals on the man advantage and adding a shorthanded goal in front of a crowd of 10,652, the seventh-largest in arena history.

“There’s no better building in the country to win two games when you’re at home,” said Gophers coach Bob Motzko. “To hear the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ and our fans … What we just went through [a seven-game losing streak], you’ve got to throw your first shout out to our fans. A sellout crowd, enthusiastic. And then our guys didn’t let them down.”

Erik Påhlsson contributed two goals and an assist, while goalie Luca Di Pasquo made 33 saves out of 38 shots. His performance was crucial in holding off a strong push from the Badgers.

Key Performances and Game Highlights

The Gophers’ offense was led by the line of Brody Lamb, centering LJ Mooney and Ziemer. This trio combined for five goals and seven assists in the series. Mooney had three assists in the finale, while Ziemer added an assist to his two goals. Lamb had a goal and an assist as well.

Other contributors included Luke Mittelstadt, Beckett Hendrickson, and Leo Gruba, who all found the back of the net. The Gophers will return to action on Feb. 6-7 at home against Ohio State, aiming to build on their recent success.

“We all felt like we needed it, and we’ve been working hard to get the games to where we want them,” said Påhlsson, who had three goals in the series. “It was so nice to win and get a little bit of a reward for what we’ve been putting in.”

Special teams played a significant role in the game. The Gophers capitalized on their first power play when Lamb scored a quick goal to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. Mooney then stole the puck and set up Ziemer for a shorthanded goal, extending the lead to 2-0.

Ziemer continued to shine, scoring another power-play goal that became a highlight of the game. The goal involved a slick pass from Lamb, who found Ziemer charging into the zone. Ziemer then flipped a shot between his legs, beating the goalie and drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

Momentum Builds for the Gophers

Wisconsin tried to respond, but Di Pasquo made several key saves throughout the game. Despite a late push from the Badgers, the Gophers maintained their lead, with Mittelstadt and Hendrickson adding more goals to extend the margin.

Badgers coach Mike Hastings pulled Hauser after the first period, replacing him with Eli Pulver. However, Påhlsson quickly capitalized on the change, scoring a tip-in goal just 38 seconds into the second period.

Motzko praised the team’s effort and emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum as the season progresses. “Our team has been battling in practice,” he said. “We have to continue to do that as it gets late in the season now, but they’ve been grinding hard. … They’ve taken the challenge, and they’ve raised the bar. It’s a formula that we’re going to have to stick with until it’s ingrained.”

With the sweep over Wisconsin, the Gophers are looking to carry this momentum forward. Their next games will be against Ohio State, and the team is eager to build on the success they’ve recently experienced.
