Barcelona Secures a 2-0 Victory in a Heated Catalan Derby

BARCELONA, Spain — In a highly charged Catalan derby, Barcelona emerged victorious with a 2-0 win against Espanyol. The match was marked by intense emotions, especially for goalkeeper Joan García, who faced a hostile crowd during his return to the RCDE Stadium.

Fermín López played a crucial role in the victory, setting up two late goals that ultimately secured the win for the La Liga leaders. Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski found the back of the net in the 86th and 90th minutes respectively, sealing the outcome of the match.

Despite the final score, Espanyol put in a commendable performance, dominating much of the game. Their attack was relentless, but García’s exceptional saves kept them at bay. His most notable moment came in the 39th minute when he made a reflex one-hand save to block a point-blank header from Pere Milla.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick praised García’s performance, stating, “Espanyol played a fantastic game. We didn’t deserve it (the win),” he said. “I have to say thank you to Joan García. He played an unbelievable match. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and we had the players off the bench who showed the quality this team has.”

Flick also acknowledged Espanyol coach Manolo González for helping García develop last season, which caught the attention of many top European clubs.

“(García) plays for us now and he has played unbelievable all season. He played fantastic and the clean sheet today was his responsibility.”

Olmo opened the scoring for Barcelona with a well-timed pass that found its way past Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dimitrovic. Fermín then added another assist, dribbling past his marker before laying off the ball for Lewandowski to finish.

Before the late surge by Barcelona, the majority of the action was centered around García’s box, where he made three critical stops to deny Roberto in the second half.

The loss ended Espanyol’s five-game winning streak, their best run since the 1998-99 season.

“Today was a day to win and we let it get away from us,” said Espanyol’s González.

Barcelona extended its lead over second-placed Real Madrid to seven points ahead of Real Madrid’s match against Real Betis on Sunday.

Villarreal secured a 3-1 victory over Elche, ending a three-game losing streak across various competitions. The win ensured Villarreal remained in third place, 11 points behind Barcelona.

Celta Vigo defeated Valencia 4-1 at home, with Borja Iglesias scoring twice. This result left Valencia on the brink of the relegation zone after just one win in 13 matches.

Valencia’s coach Carlos Corberán commented, “The numbers speak for themselves.”
