Field Conditions Improve, Allowing for Extended Play

Field conditions have returned to normal, which led to a slight adjustment in the schedule today. The start time was pushed from noon to 1 p.m., but the delay was well worth it as fans were treated to five full innings of baseball. A roller was used to smooth the infield, and the improvements were evident in the quality of play.

Pitching Dominates, Offense Struggles

Pitching remained strong, continuing where it left off from yesterday. The pitchers were able to dominate the hitters, keeping the offense at bay. However, the offensive side of the team struggled significantly, managing only six singles and scoring just two runs. The first run came from a failed pickoff attempt, highlighting some defensive issues.

The defense’s main challenge was a pickoff to first base, which allowed a runner to advance to third. This issue was particularly noticeable in the field, where the team faced several errors due to the rough conditions. Despite this, Fabio Peralta stood out with multiple hits, signaling his return to form after a difficult preseason fall. Unfortunately, the rest of the lineup remained quiet at the plate.

Notably, Jailen Watkins, Cian Copeland, and Daniel Covet did not record any plate appearances. However, Daniel did play third base defensively, showing his versatility on the field.

Pitching Performance: Rob Evans and Lazaro Collera

Rob Evans and Lazaro Collera each pitched three innings during today’s scrimmage. Rob is vying for a spot in the weekend rotation, and by the third inning, he was in top form, striking out three batters in a row—Michael Torres, Brandon DeGoti, and Derek Williams. His performance was impressive and demonstrated his potential for a key role in the rotation.

In contrast, Lazaro Collera faced challenges in the third inning, allowing three consecutive singles from Fabio Peralta, Max Galvin, and Brylan West. He also had a failed pickoff attempt that resulted in one run. A sacrifice fly by Alonzo Alvarez brought in a second run, marking the only scoring opportunities for the offense today.

Michael Fernandez and Jake Lodgek Show Mixed Performances

Michael Fernandez and Jake Lodgek both finished their scrimmages today. Michael has been working to improve after a difficult fall, during which he struggled considerably. While he managed to record one walk, his main issue was a misfire on a pickoff attempt to first base. Like Lorenzo, his throw was off-target, revealing some defensive inconsistencies.

Defensively, first base isn’t our strongest position, and the infield has faced challenges due to the field conditions. With more repetitions, these throwing errors should decrease. In both of Michael’s two innings, he encountered errors—one on his own throw to first and another involving his shortstop, Vance Sheahan. Thanks to the strong arm of the center fielder, uncertain whether it was Torres or Peralta, Sheahan was doubled up at home, preventing a run.

Lodgek completed his two innings smoothly, only issuing a walk to Dylan Dubovik. His performance was consistent and showed promise for future games.

Offensive Struggles and Defensive Concerns

Offensively, the team’s performance was underwhelming. The solution lies in spending more time in the batting cage and working to eliminate the rust from the two-month layoff. They have three weeks to regain their timing before their plate appearances begin to count. While the pitching is solid, the offense should not be struggling at the plate. Strikeouts were reduced to twelve today, but they remain too high. With only six hits and Fabio being the only player with multiple hits, today’s performance leaves much to be desired.

Watkins, Covet, and Copeland failed to make a plate appearance, further highlighting the offensive struggles.

Defensive Weaknesses and Positional Decisions

Defensive weaknesses are becoming apparent. Brylan West and Donavan Jeffrey have shown signs of being somewhat lazy and uncomfortable in their positions, particularly at first base. Cian Copeland has shown the most promise, but due to his experience, JD will start West. The situation with the catcher is similar, though less obvious. Alex Sosa will get the starting role over Alonzo Alvarez, who has outperformed Sosa both defensively and at the plate. Ideally, JD should split their playing time evenly rather than favoring one over the other.

A decision on the middle infield is still pending. My preference is for Jake at shortstop, given his throwing arm and familiarity with the position from last year, and Vance at second base.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, the team will wrap up week one of the preseason with a scheduled start time of noon again. However, there is a possibility of a delay if the team decides to continue working on the infield. The focus remains on improving field conditions and refining performances ahead of the regular season.
