Abhishek Sharma’s Record-Breaking Performance in T20I

Abhishek Sharma made history during the third T20I against New Zealand in Guwahati by reaching fifty in just 14 balls, marking the second-fastest fifty for India in T20Is. The fastest remains Yuvraj Singh’s 12-ball fifty in the 2007 World T20 against England. This achievement also stands as the quickest by any batter against New Zealand.

Powerplay Fifties and Statistical Milestones

Abhishek has reached fifty within the powerplay on three occasions, with two of those coming in 2025 against England and Sri Lanka. He is only the second batter in men’s T20Is to have three powerplay fifties, with Eswatini’s Adil Butt being the other. Both players achieved this feat with ball-by-ball data available.

In terms of scoring quickly, Abhishek and Suryakumar Yadav each have nine fifties in 25 or fewer balls in T20Is. No other batter has more than seven such fifties in this format. Abhishek now has three fifties in 20 or fewer balls, matching the record held by Yuvraj Singh, David Warner, Colin Munro, and Phil Salt. He is only behind Saudi Arabia’s Faisal Khan, who has five.

India’s Successful Chase and Historic Win

India successfully chased a target of 154 against New Zealand in Guwahati, which is the second-highest team total achieved within ten overs in T20Is. Australia previously achieved a higher target of 155 against Scotland in 9.4 overs in 2024. Both teams have the two fastest successful chases of 150-plus targets in T20Is.

India reached the target in 60 balls, marking their fourth-largest win by balls to spare in men’s T20Is and their biggest at home. It was also the heaviest defeat for New Zealand by balls remaining in men’s T20Is.

Powerplay Performance and Team Records

India’s powerplay total of 94 for 2 against New Zealand is their second-highest in this phase in men’s T20Is. The highest remains 95 for 1 against England in Mumbai last year.

The team reached 50 in just 3.1 overs, the fastest team 50 in men’s T20Is. Their previous fastest was 3.4 overs against Bangladesh in 2023.

Abhishek’s Unbroken Innings

Abhishek faced zero dot balls during his 20-ball 68 not out, the highest individual score without a dot ball in men’s T20Is where ball-by-ball data is available. His innings of 20 balls is also the joint-longest without a dot delivery.

Productive Overs and Team Dominance

India’s fourth and seventh overs were the least productive in their innings, scoring only 11 runs. In contrast, New Zealand had only six overs that fetched ten or more runs, with only two overs exceeding 11 runs.

No team innings in men’s T20Is longer than five overs had every over go for ten or more runs before India’s innings on Sunday.

Winning Streaks and Consistent Success

India has won 11 consecutive T20I series (or tournaments) since 2024, tying with Pakistan’s 11 from 2016-18 for the joint-longest series-winning streak in men’s T20Is.

India has also gone 12 consecutive bilateral T20I series without a defeat since losing to West Indies in August 2023, matching their own run from 2021-23. They have won each of their last nine bilateral series, starting with a 3-0 win against Afghanistan in January 2024. This is the joint-second-longest such streak, behind Pakistan’s ten from 2016-18, while Namibia also won nine in a row from 2021-25.
