Slay wrote, “Up by 17 and UK walked you down in your house and talked to you about it on the way back. This is a test of ‘WILL’ for this Volunteer team. If that bell isn’t answered this will be a long long season of disappointment.”

His words reflect the sentiment of many fans who feel the team is lacking the necessary leadership and resilience. The second half was a perfect example of how Kentucky gradually chipped away at Tennessee’s lead, eventually taking the lead in the final minute.

Coach Rick Barnes Speaks Out

After the game, head coach Rick Barnes addressed the situation, emphasizing that players like Zakai Zeigler, Jahmai Mashack, Santiago Vescovi, and Josiah-Jordan James would have handled the situation differently.

“Those guys win these games,” Barnes said. “Because they’re not going to collapse on defense like that. And that’s what it was. It was a collapse defensively, and those guys weren’t nearly as talented as these guys are offensively. But at the end of the game, I think your defense still wins and taking care of the ball. You do those two things and rebound the way we normally rebound, and we’ve got a chance.”

Unfortunately, those key players are no longer on the roster, leaving the current team without the leadership and defensive grit needed to close out tough games.

Looking Ahead for Tennessee

For Tennessee to avoid another disappointing season, they need a player who can step up and motivate their teammates in the same way Zeigler and Mashack did. So far, that individual hasn’t emerged from the current roster.
