Eagles Search for New Offensive Coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles are currently in the process of finding their next offensive coordinator after parting ways with Kevin Patullo following his first year in the role. The team has been conducting a wide-ranging search, having already requested over nine interviews. However, one potential candidate remains out of reach due to a block from another team.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Eagles sought to interview Klayton Adams, the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, for the same position. Dallas, however, blocked the request. This move highlights the competitive nature of NFL coaching searches, especially within divisional rivals.

Blocking Requests: A Common Practice

It is not unusual for teams to block other organizations from interviewing their coaches, particularly when those coaches are under contract. This practice is generally accepted as a way to protect valuable staff members. However, the situation becomes more complex when it comes to play-calling responsibilities.

In the case of the Cowboys, head coach Brian Schottenheimer is responsible for calling the offensive plays. In contrast, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni delegates this responsibility to his offensive coordinator. This distinction can influence whether an interview is considered a lateral move or a significant shift in roles.

Play-Calling and Lateral Moves

Typically, if an offensive coordinator works under a head coach who calls the plays, they are not seen as a lateral move when applying for a position where they could call plays themselves. Organizations often allow these interviews to take place. For example:

• Dan Pitcher, the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals under Zac Taylor (who calls the plays), was permitted to interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Todd Bowles serves as head coach.
• Adam Stenavich, the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers under Matt LaFleur (who calls the plays), was allowed to interview with the Tennessee Titans, led by Robert Saleh.

Eagles’ Other Interview Requests

The Eagles also reached out to offensive coordinators from the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears, knowing that both Shane Steichen and Ben Johnson call the plays for their respective teams. These requests were reportedly granted, meaning the Eagles are expected to schedule their eighth and ninth interviews soon.

Interestingly, among all teams that did not replace their head coaches and had requests to interview their offensive coordinators, the Cowboys are the only ones to block such a request. This decision may stem from several factors.

Rivalry and Strategic Considerations

One possible reason for the block is the fierce divisional rivalry between the Eagles and the Cowboys. Both teams are vying for dominance in the NFC East, and sharing strategic insights could be seen as a disadvantage. Another angle is the value of Adams himself. He has played a crucial role in the Cowboys’ offense, which ranked second in total yards and seventh in points scored during the season.

Despite his contributions, Adams has spent most of his career coaching tight ends and the offensive line. He has never called plays before, which may make him unprepared for a full-time coordinator role. As a result, he continues to work under Schottenheimer, who handles the play-calling for one of the league’s most dynamic offenses.

The Eagles Continue Their Search

With Adams now off the table, the Eagles will have to continue their search for a new offensive coordinator and play caller. The team is likely to look at other candidates who have experience in play-calling and can bring fresh ideas to the offense.

As the NFL continues to evolve, the role of the offensive coordinator becomes increasingly important. The Eagles will need to find someone who can not only manage the offense but also adapt to the challenges of the modern game.
