Tennessee Falls to Arkansas in SEC Opener

No. 19 Tennessee Basketball faced a crucial test in their SEC opener against No. 18 Arkansas, but the Vols struggled with key issues that ultimately led to an 86-75 loss at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville.

The game was marked by several challenges for the Volunteers. They missed 12 of 23 free throws, committed 14 turnovers, and failed to capitalize on opportunities that could have shifted the momentum in their favor. Arkansas took full advantage, using their strong performance from the free-throw line and effective playmaking to secure the win.

Freshman Amari Evans was the standout performer for Tennessee, scoring 16 points off the bench. Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 14 points, while Nate Ament contributed 13 points. However, Ament’s performance was marred by his shooting from the free-throw line, where he went 5-for-11. JP Estrella chipped in nine points and four rebounds in just 11 minutes, though he struggled in the second half, scoring only five points.

Jaylen Carey scored six points on 3-for-8 shooting and missed both of his free-throw attempts. Bishop Boswell, Felix Okpara, and Evans each went 1-for-2 from the line. Despite these efforts, the Vols were unable to overcome their shortcomings.

On the other side, Arkansas showcased a balanced attack. Freshman Darius Acuff led the way with 29 points, while Maleek Thomas added 18. Acuff and Karter Knox hit back-to-back threes late in the game, extending the Razorbacks’ lead and sealing the victory. Arkansas shot an impressive 29-of-33 from the free-throw line, capitalizing on Tennessee’s mistakes. The Hogs scored 17 points off the 14 turnovers and had 13 second-chance points, out-rebounding the Vols 36-33 overall and 12-11 on the offensive glass.

Arkansas took control of the game with a 12-0 run over three minutes and 50 seconds in the second half, during which Tennessee went scoreless for over five minutes. Ament missed the front end of a 1-and-1 during the run, further compounding the Vols’ struggles.

Evans managed to hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 11:06 remaining, putting Tennessee up 58-55. However, Arkansas responded with the 12-point run to take a 67-58 lead. Gillespie finally hit a three-pointer with 5:29 left, bringing the Vols within five points, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.

Tennessee built a five-point lead early in the second half, but they couldn’t maintain it. The Vols led by four with 15:26 remaining, but Arkansas capitalized on a four-point play by Acuff after a foul on Boswell, who had already drawn his third foul of the game. Later, another three-point play by Arkansas extended their lead, this time with 12:16 left and Tennessee leading by five.

At halftime, Arkansas led 37-36 despite seven lead changes in the first half. Tennessee struggled offensively, going 2-for-8 from the free-throw line, committing six turnovers, and being out-rebounded in the first half. The Vols started strong with a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes, but Arkansas responded with an 11-2 run and led for just over 10 minutes before halftime.

Estrella scored seven points in six minutes in the first half, while Evans added six points in nine minutes. The two combined to shoot 6-for-6 from the field. Ament had three points in the first half, but missed three of four free throws. Gillespie scored four points on 2-for-7 shooting, including 0-for-3 from the 3-point line.

Thomas scored 12 points, and Acuff added 10 in the first half for Arkansas. The lead changed hands seven times, with Tennessee rallying from a 27-20 deficit to take a 36-35 lead on a put-back by Estrella with 18 seconds left in the half.

Upcoming Schedule

Tennessee will look to bounce back when they face Texas on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The game will be held at the Food City Center.

The Vols and Longhorns have met five times over the last four seasons, including two postseason games. Tennessee won in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament last season and in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2024.

The January SEC schedule is packed for the Volunteers, with games against No. 22 Florida next Saturday, No. 14 Alabama on January 24, and No. 23 Georgia on January 27. Tennessee will also host Texas A&M on January 13, Kentucky on January 17, and Auburn on January 31.
