All the University of Vermont winter sports teams are showing strong performances, with several coming off impressive victories. Among them, the men’s basketball team stands out as the only remaining undefeated team in America East play, starting the season with a 3-0 record. Meanwhile, the women’s hockey team has maintained an unbeaten streak in its last four games, securing three wins and one tie.
The men’s basketball team will have a day off on Saturday, January 17, before heading to Albany for a crucial game on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which will be broadcast on ESPNU at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 19. Friday, January 16
Women’s Hockey
- Vermont 2, Maine 2 (Vermont wins shootout 2-1)
Vermont: Oona Havana scored one goal. Julia Mesplede contributed one goal and one assist. Josie Hemp, Rose-Marie Brochu, and Natalie Zarcone each recorded an assist. Zoe Cliche made 20 saves.
Maine: Stephanie Jacob and Mackenzie Podewell each scored a goal. Sade Sandilands and Gracie Hanson provided two assists each. Isabelle Michaud and Kiia Lahtinen added one assist each. Kiia Lahtinen made 26 saves.
Note: Kaylee Lewis scored the game-winning shot in the fifth round of the penalty shootout. Both teams converted their first attempts but missed in rounds 2 through 4.

- UConn 4, Vermont 1
UConn: Joey Muldowney scored two goals. Ethan Whitcomb, Mike Murtagh, and Jake Richard each added a goal and two assists. Trey Scott and Ryan Tattle each had two assists. Tom Messineo and Ethan Gardula each provided one assist. Tyler Muszelik made 30 saves.
Vermont: Jonah Aegerter scored one goal. Cedrick Guindon and Matteo Michels each recorded an assist. Axel Mangbo made 28 saves.
Note: The Catamounts’ three-game winning streak was ended by No. 11-ranked UConn.

Women’s Hockey
- Vermont 2, Maine 1 (OT)
Vermont: Kaylee Lewis scored one goal and recorded one assist. Ashley Kokavec added one goal and one assist. Zoe Cliche made 27 saves.
Maine: Kendall Sundby scored one goal. Madisyn Ryan made 28 saves.
Note: In the third period, Lewis tied the game, and Kokavec scored the overtime winner on senior day for the Catamounts (10-12-4, 4-7-3).
Men’s Hockey
- Vermont 4, UConn 2
Vermont: Colin Kessler scored two goals. Blake Steenerson added one goal and one assist. Daniel Sambuco and Aiden Wright each contributed one goal and one assist. Aiden Wright made 32 saves.
UConn: Tristan Fraser and Jake Richard each scored one goal. Tyler Muszelik made 29 saves.
Note: Sambuco and Kessler scored second-period goals to turn a 2-1 deficit into a lead. Steenerson added an insurance goal in the third period as Vermont (9-12, 6-7) split the weekend series with No. 11-ranked UConn (13-7-3, 9-5-1).
Women’s Basketball
- Vermont 60, UAlbany 49
Vermont: Jadyn Weltz scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out three assists. Nikola Priede contributed 13 points and nine rebounds. Malia Lenz and Emma Haan each scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Keira Hanson added eight points.
UAlbany: Martina Borrellas scored 14 points. Delanie Hill added 10 points.
Note: Defending league champion Vermont (14-5, 4-1) outscored Albany 23-9 in the fourth quarter during a rematch of last year’s America East title game.
