Canadian men’s national team left winger Ali Ahmed is reportedly making a move from Vancouver Whitecaps FC to Norwich City in the English Championship. This transfer marks a significant step in his career as he aims to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada will co-host alongside the United States and Mexico.

According to TSN’s Matthew Scianitti, Ahmed is currently in England and has already undergone a medical with the club. He is expected to sign a two-year deal, marking his first professional move out of North America. Ahmed played a crucial role with the Whitecaps in 2025, contributing 11 assists in 27 regular-season and playoff matches. His performance was instrumental in the team’s run to the MLS Cup final, where they fell 3–1 to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami. Ahmed scored the team’s only goal in that match, becoming just the second Canadian to ever score in an MLS Cup final.

With the Canadian national team, Ahmed has shown consistent performances, scoring one goal and providing four assists in 16 starts over the last 22 matches under manager Jesse Marsch. This has made him a strong candidate to start on the left wing ahead of Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies at left back during the 2026 World Cup.

The 25-year-old had one year remaining on his MLS contract, which means Vancouver will receive a transfer fee. According to Manuel Veth, the initial transfer fee is estimated at around $2.3 million, with additional clauses and a sell-on clause included.

Ahmed had previously attracted interest from European clubs, including Schalke 04 in the 2. Bundesliga. However, he chose to stay with Vancouver through the end of the 2025 MLS season.

Known for his high-pressing abilities and individual dribbling skills, Ahmed has demonstrated a talent for breaking down defenses in transition while also maintaining consistent defensive contributions.

“When we’re pressing, it’s like having an extra player on the pitch. Really,” Marsch said of Ahmed in November, before he was named a finalist for Canada Soccer’s Player of the Year Award in 2025. “He can cover ground. He’s intelligent in his position. He’s aggressive when he goes after things. He’s adapted and learned exactly what we need out of him in that position. Because of that, he’s been an incredible addition and an incredible boost to everything we do.”

A native of Toronto, Ahmed will join a growing list of Canadians who have played for Norwich City. This includes Paul Peschisolido, who had a brief stint with the club in 2005, and Jimmy Brennan, who played for three seasons from 2003 to 2006. At the same time, he will join American forward Josh Sargent as a Concacaf player in the squad.

Norwich, currently sitting 22nd in the Championship, is battling to avoid relegation to League One. The Canaries have scored just 28 goals in 25 games, which is the eighth-worst in the league. They see Ahmed as a potential starting option to elevate their performance.

In MLS, the Whitecaps will look to their depth and the January transfer window to remain competitive for the MLS Cup and the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2026. Ryan Gauld, a Scotland World Cup hopeful and Whitecaps Designated Player, is expected to take on more responsibility after missing most of 2025 due to a knee injury.

Ahmed is likely to return to the Whitecaps’ home stadium, BC Place, in June. The venue will host Canada’s World Cup Group B games against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24. The tournament opener will take place in Toronto on June 12 against one of Italy, Wales, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Northern Ireland.
