But the outcome of Sunday’s game between the Saints and the Atlanta Falcons could create a three-way tie that shifts the divisional advantage back to the Panthers. If the Falcons manage to defeat the Saints, they will also end up with an 8-9 record, matching the Panthers and the Buccaneers. This would result in a three-way tie at the top of the division, with the Panthers ultimately winning the division and hosting a playoff game.

This situation highlights how two teams with nothing to play for and two teams already eliminated from playoff contention are now determining the division winner and influencing the path for several teams heading into the postseason.

A Controversial Playoff Format

This scenario is just one part of the story. The subplot involves an 8-9 team winning the division and hosting a playoff game. This not only forces a team with a better record to travel to them but also a team that is likely to have the second-best record in the NFC.

This will be the fifth time in NFL history (excluding strike years) that a team with a losing record will make the playoffs. No matter which team it ends up being, it will be the second time one of these franchises has done so (Carolina in 2014 and Tampa Bay in 2022).

There is already ongoing debate in the NFL about whether division winners should automatically host playoff games. This outcome is only adding more fuel to that fire. It is almost certain that a 12-win team (or even a 13-win team) will have to travel on the road to a team that is four or five games worse.

The Divisional Format Debate

As long as the divisional format remains in place, there must be some reward for winning the division. If not, the leagues should consider eliminating divisions and blending teams into two large conferences, simply taking the top seven teams. Until such a change is made, this format is here to stay, and everyone will have to deal with it.

For now, the Panthers missed their opportunity to win the division on Saturday. The Buccaneers still have a chance. All eyes are now on two teams with no hope of making the playoffs. This kind of unpredictability is becoming typical for the NFC South.
