The Carolina Panthers had a critical opportunity to secure their place in the NFL Playoffs by defeating their division rivals, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on Saturday night. However, they fell short, losing 16-14 in a game where the Buccaneers limited the Panthers’ chances to get into field goal range.

With the win, the Buccaneers improved their record to 8-19 and currently hold the No. 4 seed in the NFC. However, they are not officially in the postseason, and the Panthers, who now sit at 8-9, are also not out of the picture. The outcome of the final game between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon will determine the fate of both teams.

If the Falcons win, they will tie the Panthers and the Saints at 8-9, creating a three-way tie in the NFC South. In such a scenario, the tiebreaker for the division and the final playoff spot would go to the Panthers, as they have a 3-1 record against both the Buccaneers and the Falcons. Additionally, the Buccaneers and Falcons have worse records against each other compared to the Panthers.

Following the loss, Bryce Young addressed the media in a press conference, taking responsibility for his team’s mistakes during the game. A notable moment came when a flea-flicker play involving Rico Dowdle went wrong, resulting in a fumble due to the wet field. Young accepted blame for not recovering the ball in time.

“My natural instinct was to try to pick it up, but in the end, it’s not what happened. Obviously, in the end, the ball touched my hands, so I take all the ownership for that,” he said.

“I look in the mirror first. There’s stuff that I could’ve done better. We’re all guys that take ownership. That’s not the reason—credit to our opponent. We weren’t good enough today,” he added.

Young’s performance included 24 completions out of 35 attempts for 266 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Despite these numbers, costly errors cost the Panthers the game, as the Buccaneers capitalized on their opportunities.

When asked about the Panthers still having a shot at winning the division and making the playoffs, Young was honest about the situation.

“Again, not feeling what we want to right now, but I wouldn’t want to be in this position, this year, with any other group. So, we’ll sit by the TV tomorrow,” he said during part of his remarks.

However, Young later mentioned that he might not watch the Falcons-Saints game to see the result. Instead, he may wait to learn his team’s fate.

“I don’t know. We’ll see. I haven’t thought about it. It’d be a tough one to—might not even watch to be honest with you. I might just see how it ends up,” Young said, adding, “It’s on us for that being our reality, so now it’s in someone else’s hands.”
