A Sudden Setback for the Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos were still basking in the glow of a thrilling 33-30 overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Round when a devastating blow hit the football world. Quarterback Bo Nix, the team’s leader and the mastermind behind an NFL record 12 comeback wins during the regular season, suffered a season-ending ankle injury during the game against the Bills and will be sidelined for the remainder of the postseason.

According to head coach Sean Payton, Nix was already scheduled to have surgery to repair his ankle on Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama. Despite the injury, Nix led another game-winning drive in what would be his final appearance of the season, setting up a 23-yard field goal by Will Lutz that sent the Broncos to the AFC Championship Game. They will host the winner of Sunday’s matchup between the Houston Texans and New England Patriots.

Nix completed 26 of 46 passes for 276 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in the win over the Bills. According to Schefter, Nix injured his ankle on the second-to-last play in overtime. “We felt it was better to tell everyone now,” said Payton.

Jarrett Stidham Steps In

Stidham has been the Broncos’ backup quarterback since 2023, when he served as Russell Wilson’s backup and later became Nix’s backup for the past two seasons. The competition between Nix and Stidham for the starting role was intense before the 2024 season, especially after Nix was selected in the first round (No. 12 overall) of the 2024 NFL draft.

Despite not becoming the starter, Stidham’s approach and performance when called upon have made him one of the most sought-after backup quarterbacks in the NFL. His skills were on full display in the Broncos’ 30-9 preseason opener win over the San Francisco 49ers on August 9, where he completed 14 of 15 passes for 136 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, along with 3 carries for 36 yards in just two quarters.

Stidham spent the 2023 season as Russell Wilson’s backup and went 1-1 in two starts. He is 1-3 as a starter in his career. A fourth-round pick (No. 133 overall) from Auburn in the 2019 NFL draft, Stidham began his career with the New England Patriots and later played for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Nix’s injury marks the end of a 36-game consecutive start streak, including every regular-season game and two playoff games over the last two seasons. The reaction to his injury was a mix of shock, devastation, and heartbreak following Denver’s first playoff win in a decade.
