The San Francisco Giants Withdraw from the Race

After signing Luis Arraez, the San Francisco Giants are no longer in the market for St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan. Arraez, a hitter known for his high batting average, signed a one-year deal with the Giants, and they plan to position him at second base, which is Donovan’s primary position.

This move effectively removes the Giants from the Donovan trade discussions. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Giants and Cardinals had already begun exchanging prospect names in potential trade packages. In December, infielder Gavin Kilen and left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt were mentioned as possible assets in a trade.

Donovan finished the 2025 season with a .287/.353/.422 slash line, translating to a 119 wRC+. He hit 10 home runs, drove in 50 runners, and scored 64 runs himself. He also made his first All-Star Game this year, adding another achievement to his career. His career slash line stands at .282/.361/.411 with a wRC+ of 119.

Chaim Bloom and the Remaining Trade Options

With the Giants out of the picture, Chaim Bloom, the Cardinals’ general manager, is expected to continue trade negotiations with other teams. The Mariners and Red Sox remain among the more active suitors, while the Royals have shown some interest but are fading in the talks. Both the Mariners and Red Sox could benefit from Donovan’s consistency, versatility, and leadership on the field.

In recent reports, the Mariners have been linked to prospects such as switch pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje and outfielder Lazaro Montes. A potential trade with the Red Sox would mark Bloom’s third transaction with his former employer this winter. A deal with the Royals could bring back one of their pitchers, an area where the team has strong depth.

Time Is Running Out for a Trade

Pitchers and catchers are set to report to spring training in less than two weeks, and time is quickly running out for Chaim Bloom to finalize a trade for Donovan. Bloom has unofficially set the deadline for a trade to be completed before spring training begins, and that date is fast approaching.
