A Dominant Performance by Penncrest in a Key League Matchup

In a game that seemed like a potential trap for the Penncrest Lions, the team showcased their strength and cohesion, leading to a decisive 63-43 victory over Haverford. The win marked another impressive showing for the Lions, who improved to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the Central League.

The key player on the court was senior guard Connor Cahill, whose performance was nothing short of exceptional. With 20 points, three steals, five assists, and three rebounds, Cahill set the tone for the entire team. His ability to push the ball up the court and create opportunities for his teammates was instrumental in the Lions’ success.

Cahill’s play was particularly effective against Haverford’s 1-2-2 press. He managed to avoid pressure from the defense and used his quickness to get to the basket. This aggressive approach not only helped him score but also forced the Fords into early foul trouble. By the end of the first half, Haverford had 11 turnovers, which significantly limited their offensive production.

Team Effort and Efficient Shooting

While Cahill was the standout performer, he wasn’t alone in contributing to the win. Mikey Mita added 26 points, shooting 9-for-14 from the field, including a crucial 3-pointer at the end of the first half. Sean Benson chipped in with eight points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Will Stanton contributed seven points. Penncrest shot an impressive 61% from the field (22-for-36), showcasing their efficiency on both ends of the court.

The Lions’ defense was equally impressive. They held Haverford scoreless for the first 5:41 of the game and limited the Fords to just 15 points and 11 turnovers at halftime. Even when Haverford improved their ball movement in the second half, they were unable to close the gap, as Penncrest maintained control throughout the game.

A Strong Schedule and Team Chemistry

Coach Mike Doyle has been working to build a strong team through challenging competition. The Lions have faced some of the toughest teams in the area, including Neumann-Goretti and Bonner, which has helped them develop resilience and adaptability. Cahill credited this schedule for preparing the team for high-pressure situations.

“We’ve played a hell of a schedule,” Cahill said. “We played Neumann-Goretti last year. Their pressure was crazy. We saw that. We saw Bonner earlier in the season. Going against those crazy hard teams who press us every possession, it makes this pressure feel like nothing.”

This experience translated into better ball movement and teamwork during the game. Guard Carson Uff noted that the Lions focused on moving the ball more effectively, which allowed them to find open shots and create scoring opportunities for each other.

Other Games in the Central League

In other Central League matchups, Springfield continued its strong performance with a 37-31 win over Garnet Valley. Will Carr led the Cougars with 18 points, while Peter Altes and TJ Valletti added seven each. Grayson Golek and Luke Faccenda scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Garnet Valley.

Lower Merion also secured a win over Marple Newtown, with Mike Rush hitting five 3-pointers for 19 points. Jackson Burger and Jack Dean added 14 and 10 points, respectively, but the Tigers couldn’t maintain their lead after halftime.

Nonleague Results

In nonleague action, Haverford School defeated Friends’ Select 70-49. Manny Butts led the way with 17 points, while Silas Graham and Dillon Gamble added 15 and 12 points, respectively. Episcopal Academy also had a strong showing, defeating Friends’ Central 71-46. Wynton Foster scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half, and Dawson Brown and Gage Cunningham added 14 and 11 points.

Lancaster Mennonite narrowly beat Chester 50-48, with Paul Lindsay and Jalen Harris scoring 14 and eight points. However, the Clippers struggled to overcome an early deficit.

Catholic League Action

In the Catholic League, Bonner & Prendergast dominated Lansdale Catholic 77-59. Korey Francis led the Friars with 36 points and 10 rebounds, while Kam Jakson and Jakeem Carroll added 15 and 12 points, respectively. Devon Prep edged out Cardinal O’Hara 45-38, with Gabe Skehan and Jack Quinn scoring 14 and 11 points. Roman Catholic also had a strong performance, defeating Archbishop Carroll 64-36. Nick Lugendo and Yasir Turner each scored 10 points for the Patriots.
