Gannon’s career trajectory within the NFL has been impressive. He was only 40 years old when he first took on a head-coaching role, showcasing the high regard other coaches have for his abilities. Starting as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Vikings from 2014 to 2017, Gannon then became the Colts’ cornerbacks coach from 2018 to 2020. His move to the Eagles as their defensive coordinator followed under Nick Sirianni.

Gannon’s Impact on the Eagles’ Defense

When Gannon took over the Eagles’ defense, it was already a strong unit led by Jim Schwartz. Some may argue that Gannon inherited a great defense and didn’t necessarily build it into something special. However, the Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018, which highlights the strength of the team during that period. The NFL is a fast-moving league, and there was significant turnover before Gannon took over the defensive playcalling.

Gannon’s preferred scheme differs from what Schwartz implemented. While Schwartz favored Cover 1 with some Cover 3, Gannon prefers Cover 4 or Quarters. In 2021, the Eagles’ defense excelled against the run but was average in pass coverage. Despite this, they finished in the top 10 in points allowed (seventh) and had a strong defense overall.

Comparing Defensive Schemes

The Chicago Bears faced a defensive scheme under Ben Johnson that resembled Vic Fangio’s approach in Philadelphia. Fangio also favors Quarters/Match Zone, similar to Gannon. Both coordinators use man coverage when needed and enjoy disguising plays pre-snap. The Bears did a solid job against the Eagles in 2025, which is a positive sign for the NFC North moving forward.

It’s expected that the Packers will take at least a year to adjust their personnel, much like the Eagles did during their transition from Schwartz to Gannon. However, from a Chicago Bears perspective, there’s no reason to worry about Gannon’s hiring. Ben Johnson has shown the ability to adapt his schemes, and the proof of his capability is already evident.
