A Late Show Seals a Crucial Victory for Barcelona

Barcelona secured a narrow 2-0 victory over Espanyol on Saturday, thanks to late goals from Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski. The win extended their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points, with coach Hansi Flick expressing his gratitude to goalkeeper Joan Garcia for his outstanding performance.

The match was a tense affair, with Barcelona struggling against their city rivals. However, Garcia’s heroics kept the team in contention until substitutes made the difference in the final stages. Olmo’s 86th-minute strike opened the scoring, followed by Lewandowski’s goal in the 90th minute, sealing the win for Barca.

“We didn’t deserve it, I’ll be honest, but in the end the quality we brought on the pitch after the changes decided the game,” said Flick. “First of all I have to say thank you to Joan Garcia because he played unbelievably. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”

Espanyol, who had been on a five-game winning streak, came close to earning at least a point in this fiercely contested derby. However, Barcelona’s substitutes proved decisive in the closing moments of the match.

A Hostile Reception for Garcia

Espanyol fans were particularly vocal during the match, giving Garcia a hostile reception. This was due to his recent transfer to Barcelona, making him the first player from Espanyol to join the club in over 30 years. To protect Garcia from potential projectiles, the hosts installed large safety nets behind the goals.

Fans also waved banners featuring images of rats, a symbolic gesture toward the goalkeeper. Despite the difficult environment, Garcia delivered two crucial saves in the first half, helping keep the game level at halftime.

“Joan is incredible, a great goalkeeper. Playing against his old fans, he had a great game and got a clean sheet,” said Olmo. “He will give us a lot — he’s giving us that and he will give us so much more too, I’m sure.”

Key Moments in the First Half

The first half was marked by few clear chances, with Espanyol creating the better opportunities. Roberto Fernandez had a one-on-one chance against Garcia, but the goalkeeper blocked the shot. Garcia then made an improvised save by pushing teammate Gerard Martin into the path of Pere Milla’s follow-up attempt.

Later, Garcia tipped away a header from Milla that looked destined for the back of the net. His excellent performances last season helped Espanyol avoid relegation, but he ultimately chose to move to Barcelona, a decision that did not sit well with some Espanyol fans.

In the second half, Fernandez again tested Garcia, but the goalkeeper pushed the ball to safety. Kounde cleared a dangerous shot off the line, and Garcia tipped another effort from Fernandez away from goal as Espanyol continued to press.

Substitutes Steal the Show

Barcelona’s first clear chance came in the 70th minute when Eric Garcia had a shot from close range, but Marko Dmitrovic made an impressive save to keep the game level.

Eventually, three of Flick’s substitutes combined to change the course of the match. Fermin Lopez drove forward and found Olmo, who curled a shot into the top right corner to break the deadlock. It was Olmo’s first appearance in over a month following a dislocated shoulder.

Lewandowski added the second goal in the 90th minute after another strong run from Lopez, completing Barcelona’s late surge to victory.

“I don’t celebrate the first 80 minutes, how we played,” admitted Flick. “But in the end we scored the two goals, got the three points and this is a massive message to La Liga and very important.”

Elsewhere, Villarreal maintained pressure on the top two teams with a 3-1 win over Elche. The victory saw Alberto Moleiro and Georges Mikautadze score early goals, while Alfonso Pedraza sealed the win late in the match.

Atletico Madrid, currently in fourth place, will face Real Sociedad on Sunday. A defeat by Barcelona before the winter break was a setback for Marcelino Garcia Toral’s Villarreal, but they started the new year with a convincing triumph.
