Utah Men’s Basketball Secures First Big 12 Win of the Season

The Utah men’s basketball team made history on Saturday, securing its first Big 12 win of the season with an 82-79 victory over TCU at Jon M. Huntsman Center. This win marked a significant milestone for the Runnin’ Utes, who had been struggling through a five-game losing streak.

Terrence Brown was the standout performer for Utah, leading the team with 26 points. His consistent performance throughout the game helped the Runnin’ Utes (9-9, 1-4 Big 12) maintain control and eventually pull off the win. Brown’s backcourt partner, Don McHenry, played a crucial role in the final moments, hitting key free throws as part of a 12-point contribution. Keanu Dawes also made a significant impact, adding 10 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, which proved vital in Utah’s dominance on the glass, outrebounding TCU 40-31.

On the other side, David Punch led TCU with 22 points, with 18 of those coming in the second half. Despite his efforts, the Horned Frogs (11-7, 1-4 Big 12) were unable to overcome the deficit.

Utah started the game strong with a 14-0 run, setting the tone for the rest of the match. However, it wasn’t until the full 40 minutes that the Runnin’ Utes managed to put the Horned Frogs away for good. The win snapped their five-game losing streak and provided a much-needed boost in confidence.

Throughout the game, TCU showed resilience, using a dry spell from Utah’s offense to cut their early double-digit lead to six points midway through the first half. The Horned Frogs then made a push with a couple of 3-pointers, extending their advantage to 14 points with just under six minutes left before halftime.

Brown closed out the first half with a dunk, giving Utah a 38-30 lead. This moment created some separation after TCU mounted an 11-4 run to make it a 5-point game. The second half saw TCU increase its defensive intensity, using effective ball screen traps to disrupt Utah’s offense whenever they tried to get the ball into the paint. This pressure led to nine second-half turnovers by Utah, keeping TCU within striking distance.

Despite these challenges, Utah found ways to respond. They hit a series of shots from beyond the arc and relied on Brown’s leadership down the stretch. After TCU made it a 3-point game with 13 minutes remaining, Brown took over, scoring or assisting on 15 straight points. His efforts helped Utah extend their lead by the 6-minute mark, although TCU remained persistent, getting within two points several times in the final four minutes.

With the score at 71-67, McHenry capitalized on an errant pass, finishing in transition with a layup to extend Utah’s lead to six. On the next possession, he was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three free throws, increasing Utah’s lead to 76-68 with 2 minutes left on the clock.

Utah shot 13-of-22 from the free-throw line overall and made six critical free throws in the final minute of regulation, sealing the 3-point victory. This win marked Utah’s first Big 12 win since defeating Arizona State, 99-73, on March 1.

After the game, head coach Jensen shared his thoughts on the team’s performance and progress. He emphasized the importance of continuity and teamwork, noting that players like Brown and McHenry have been the focus of opponents’ attention. Jensen praised the team’s 17 assists, highlighting how every player contributed to the win.

He also acknowledged the defensive effort, crediting the team for adapting to TCU’s different scheme. “I give our guys credit because we had two days to prepare. It was a different type of scheme, so we were mostly focused on that,” Jensen said.

On the significance of the win, Jensen stated, “Winning is always a confidence builder.” He reminded the team of their potential, emphasizing the need to make free throws and reduce turnovers in the second half.
