Cole Adams’ Decision to Enter the Transfer Portal

Alabama wide receiver Cole Adams has decided to enter the transfer portal, marking a significant shift in his college football journey. The redshirt sophomore played in all 14 games for the Crimson Tide this season, contributing with five receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, he made an impact on special teams, recording 19 punt returns for 156 yards (8.2 yards per return) and one kickoff return for a 20-yard gain.

Adams is the 10th Alabama player to enter the transfer portal this cycle, joining a list that includes wide receiver Aeryn “Bubba” Hampton, defensive back Kameron Howard, offensive linemen Roq Montgomery, Richard Young, Jalen Hale, Jaylen Mbakwe, Olaus Alinen, Joseph Ionata, and Micah DeBose. His departure leaves the team with a reduced number of wide receivers for the 2026 season, including Ryan Williams, Isaiah Horton (who is still considering the NFL Draft), Lotzeir Brooks, Rico Scott, Derek Meadows, and incoming freshman Cederian Morgan.

A Valuable Contributor

Despite his relatively smaller stature, Adams has proven to be a savvy route runner who understands how to navigate through defenses. Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb praised his ability to read coverages and make contested catches, stating, “He knows how to get in and out of breaks. He understands how to play off the leverage of defenders. In the last week and a half, has probably made more contested catches than anybody on the team.”

One of Adams’ standout performances came against Eastern Illinois, where he accumulated 99 yards in non-passing all-purpose yards. This was largely due to his return yardage, which included 20 yards on kickoff returns and 56 yards on punt returns.

A Season of Challenges

In 2024, Adams had six catches for 94 yards and served as Alabama’s primary punt returner before suffering a season-ending lower-body injury during the Missouri game on October 26. Despite this setback, he worked his way into a more consistent role on the offense and special teams in his second season with the program. In his debut year, he only appeared in two games.

His teammates have also spoken highly of Adams’ work ethic and positive attitude. Wide receiver Germie Bernard described him as having “a mindset of a dog,” emphasizing his resilience and dedication. “Whatever injury he goes through, he just continues to have a positive mindset. He always is there for his teammates, and he’s always supporting us. Cole’s a guy that’s really reliable that you can count on.”

The Transfer Portal Timeline

The transfer portal officially opened on January 2 and will close on January 16. It’s important to note that the spring portal was eliminated in September and will no longer be an option for athletes moving forward.
