AUSTIN (KXAN) — For Texas freshman Aaliyah Crump, the decision to return to the court after a significant injury was not an easy one. Missing about two months of games due to a foot injury could have easily led her to consider a medical redshirt and sit out the rest of the season. However, that was never an option for Crump.

After playing in five games at the start of the season, she faced a setback that kept her off the court for 15 games. Rather than take the path of a redshirt, she chose to focus on her rehabilitation and work her way back into the lineup. This decision wasn’t driven by pressure or obligation, but by her deep passion for the game and her desire to be part of something greater.

Crump made her triumphant return on January 18, scoring 12 points with six rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes during a dominant 80-35 win over Texas A&M. While her shooting form was still a bit off—she went 4-for-11 from the field and 0-for-4 from three-point range—her performance showed promise. The most important thing was her energy and commitment to the team.

“I just loved playing with the team in the first five games of the season,” Crump said. “It was really special to watch the team while I was on the sideline. It’s something I really want to be part of. I’m really passionate about this team and our success, so I wanted to be part of it.”

Longhorns head coach Vic Schaefer is thrilled to have Crump back on the court. He has had to manage a short rotation all season, dealing with multiple injuries beyond just Crump’s. Her ability to score from anywhere on the floor, combined with her defensive intensity, makes her a valuable asset to the team.

“She was very aggressive and made things happen,” Schaefer said. “It was really good to see her out there and play as she did. She played with a lot of juice and played hard defensively.”

Crump emphasized that she wanted to make sure she was “her best self” when she returned. She followed every step of her recovery process diligently, and her performance on the court reflected that. She played more than half the game, showing no signs of lingering effects from her injury.

She credited assistant coach Blair Schaefer, Vic’s daughter, for helping her get ready to return.

“She’s been really good for me,” Crump said. “She’s always getting in the gym with me, helping me get better and get ready to get back on the court.”

Vic Schaefer described Crump as “special,” not just for her athletic abilities but also for her character. He highlighted that her dedication to the team is what truly sets her apart.

“She could have said she wants to redshirt and not do it … never in her mind. She wants to play and be part of this team. It’s who she is, and what she’s about.”

Crump’s journey shows the power of perseverance and passion. Her story serves as an inspiration to others, proving that determination and heart can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
