A Rising Star in the SEC

Nate Oats, the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, noticed something special during a recent practice session. It was early on, and one of his players, Noah Williamson, a 7-foot center from Latvia, was making an impression. Williamson was “dunking everything,” and Oats couldn’t help but acknowledge his athleticism.

“Man, you’ve got some athleticism, Noah. SEC, coach. SEC play. SEC athleticism,” Oats said, emphasizing the importance of the league’s competitive nature.

Alabama was preparing for its first SEC game of the season against Kentucky. For Williamson, this match represented more than just another game—it was a chance to redeem himself after a challenging nonconference season. He had struggled to make an impact, but this opportunity was significant.

“To be honest, I really wanted to beat Kentucky,” Williamson said. “We played them last year at Bucknell and we lost pretty badly. This is probably my last opportunity to play them.”

Williamson seized the moment. In 18 minutes of play, he scored 10 points, all through field goals, adding four rebounds, two assists, one block, and two steals. His performance was crucial in Alabama’s 89-74 victory over Kentucky at Coleman Coliseum.

“He’s talented,” Oats remarked. “We’ve got to get his confidence going. He needed this game in a big way. Huge for him.”

This win was also vital for Alabama (11-3, 1-0 SEC). The timing of Williamson’s emergence could not have been better. Starting center Aiden Sherrell left the game in the first half due to a knee injury and was unable to return. This left Alabama’s frontcourt even thinner, but Williamson stepped up when it mattered most.

“I was told he wasn’t able to go, and I was going to have to step up,” Williamson said. “And I tried to do just that.”

Williamson contributed in multiple ways. He hit a reverse layup and a dunk, which helped him reach double digits in scoring. He also grabbed two offensive rebounds, one of which led to a three-pointer by Houston Mallette.

During a timeout, Oats met Williamson near center court to celebrate his efforts. “We’ve been asking for those types of plays from some other guys in the front court,” Oats said. “He brought it for us. That might have been the most excited I was the whole game.”

Williamson’s scoring also energized the crowd. He scored five buckets in the game alone, surpassing his total number of field goals (four) for the entire season.

“He’s a really good kid,” Oats said. “Obviously, he’s been struggling with some confidence, which we’ve been trying to give him. You’ve got to look in the mirror. As a head coach, I’ve got to do a better job pumping these guys full of confidence on some stuff. I think when he knew Aiden was going to be out, that in itself gave a little more—’you’re going to be in. We need ya.’ He’s a great kid. His teammates have really been hyping him up.”

The postgame celebration highlighted Williamson’s impact. In the video room, Oats awarded the hard hat for the Kentucky game to Amari Allen because he tallied the most blue-collar points. However, Allen immediately turned around and placed the hard hat on Williamson.

“We don’t win the game without him,” Oats said.
