The Importance of a Coach-Athlete Relationship

When players are developing their skills at the collegiate level, even the most naturally gifted talents require guidance from their coaches to channel their abilities in the right direction. That is why building a healthy relationship with the head coach is often considered essential. For Jeff Teague, however, that ideal expectation was far from reality.

A Harsh Experience Under Dino Gaudio

In fact, the former one-time All-Star once openly revealed how ruthlessly he was treated by his Wake Forest head coach, Dino Gaudio. This treatment included verbal abuse, the use of profanity, and even being labeled as the sole reason why the team wasn’t the best in the nation. Gaudio was never letting Teague get ahead of himself.

For modern-day NBA fans, it might be hard to imagine Teague as the catalyst of the team, but throughout his two-year stint at Wake Forest, he was one of the most explosive and dynamic scoring guards in the nation. Let alone his scoring average of 16.4 points per game, but Jeff’s ability to blow past defenders, score off separation, and finish creatively at the rim made him a consistent offensive threat.

So, naturally, when Teague delivered 20-or-more-point performances, he believed his production warranted recognition, especially when he was leading the team on the scoring end.

Gaudio’s Criticism and Teague’s Response

Gaudio, however, viewed such performances differently. With the head coach frustrated, he accused Teague of being a selfish player whose goal wasn’t to help the team out defensively, but to put himself individually in such positions where he could register points for his box score tally. That, for Gaudio, was one of the biggest reasons why Teague deserved no meaningful time on his Demon Deacons’ team.

“Nobody talk worse than my college coach. My college coach got banned from the NCAA. I just came up 20-something-point game and he lined everybody up in chairs – told everybody what they did great. I mean, he went through the whole team,” Teague recalled before explaining it further.

“N—a said, ‘You motherf—er… You selfish son of a b–ch.’ N—a just start rolling tape of me on defense. I’m just reaching… like, ‘Look at this selfish s—t. If Chris Paul was here, we would be the best f—ing team in the nation, but we got you.’ Well, you know me, I’m an a—hole, I double-down, ‘Play somebody else,'” Jeff stated.

Gaudio Knew Teague’s Value

Gaudio knew Teague’s value. Considering such harsh criticism, one would assume that Teague would be sidelined entirely, especially after he was delegated to the second team, as he later recalled when Wake Forest was to play top college programs like Duke, Gaudio unhesitantly added him to the starting lineup.

Put simply, Gaudio knew Teague had potential, but was determined to send a blunt message to the point guard to bring his mind down to earth. Safe to say this story only highlights how emotionally taxing the collegiate environment can be for young athletes.

The Impact of Coaching on Young Athletes

Given they haven’t earned anything major, coaches tend to get blunt, unapologetic, and unforgiving, overlooking the line of decency to challenge them. But kudos to Teague for keeping his head up and being able to prove his value.

He did it in the NBA as well, where he became an All-Star.
