The Uncertain Future of Brandon Aiyuk with the 49ers

For several months, it was widely believed that Brandon Aiyuk had played his final game with the San Francisco 49ers. This assumption stemmed from his absence after the team voided the guaranteed money on his contract for the 2026 season due to his failure to meet certain obligations during the rehab process following a knee injury sustained in mid-2024.

On Wednesday, 49ers general manager John Lynch confirmed this sentiment, stating, “Sometimes, it just doesn’t work out.” While it remains unclear whether Aiyuk will be traded or simply released, the team has made it clear that they must move forward without him.

However, the 49ers face more challenges than just the loss of Aiyuk when it comes to their wide receiver position this offseason. Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne are both set to become unrestricted free agents. Lynch has emphasized that re-signing Jennings is a top priority, but even if that happens, the team would still need to add a deep threat to their roster.

Jennings, while reliable, isn’t the type of player who can consistently stretch the field. There is a viable option for the 49ers to consider as a deep threat: Alec Pierce. The former second-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts has emerged as one of the most consistent deep threats in the league over the past two seasons.

Pierce began his career with solid production, catching 73 passes for 1,107 yards and four touchdowns over his first two seasons, averaging 15.2 yards per reception. However, he truly stepped up his game in recent years.

In 2024, Pierce recorded 37 catches for 824 yards, averaging a staggering 22.3 yards per reception—leading the NFL. Seven of those catches went for touchdowns. In 2025, he caught a career-high 47 passes for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns, maintaining a 21.3-yard average, again leading the league. His performance was even more impressive given that he only had one drop on 84 targets.

Why the 49ers Should Consider Pierce

Pierce is likely to have multiple suitors in free agency, including the Colts. However, the 49ers should seriously consider bringing him aboard. While Ricky Pearsall has the potential to be a deep threat, he has struggled with injuries. Bourne, who was the team’s best deep threat in 2025, ranked in a tie for 16th in the league at 14.9 yards per catch, but there’s no guarantee he’ll return.

Pierce could cost the 49ers some money, with Spotrac projecting a four-year deal worth $80,996,324. However, with some WR2s now commanding over $25 million or even $30 million per season, a little over $20 million per year for a player of his caliber might be well worth it.

Evaluating the Options

The 49ers need to make strategic decisions this offseason to strengthen their offense. While Aiyuk’s departure is a significant blow, it also presents an opportunity to bring in a player like Pierce, who has proven he can consistently stretch the field and create big plays.
