Maryland falls to Oregon in Friday night clash
Maryland Men’s Basketball Struggles in Loss to Oregon
The Maryland men’s basketball team faced a tough challenge against the Oregon Ducks, falling 64-54 at the Xfinity Center. The game marked a difficult start for the Terps as they looked to reset their season and secure a win in the Big Ten conference.
Solomon Washington was the standout performer for Maryland, scoring a team-high 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, giving him his second consecutive double-double. His efforts were crucial as he filled in for the injured Pharrel Payne, who is currently sidelined due to a leg injury sustained in December. Washington’s performance on both ends of the court was evident, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s struggles.
One of the main issues for the Terps this season has been their poor shooting from the field. In the loss to Oregon, Maryland shot just 28% from the floor, 20% from beyond the arc, and managed only 12 points in the paint. Despite these numbers, the team didn’t turn the ball over much, with only 10 turnovers, and they grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, showing some positive aspects of their play.
Oregon also had its challenges, as their top player, Jackson Shelstad, was out due to a hand injury. In his absence, center Nate Bittle and guard Takai Simpkins stepped up, each contributing 16 points. Their strong performance helped Oregon dominate the game, especially in the second half.
After trailing 34-27 at halftime, Maryland made a push to close the gap. Baskets by Darius Adams and Washington helped the Terps cut the lead to 43-40. Elijah Saunders hit a key three-pointer from the right corner at the 10:59 mark, tying the game. However, Oregon responded with a 12-2 run over the next seven minutes, which ultimately secured their victory. The Ducks shot 49% from the field and scored 32 points in the paint during that stretch.
This loss adds to an already challenging season for Maryland, which has struggled with consistency on the court. Head Coach Buzz Williams has been experimenting with different lineups and strategies to find a solution for his team’s performance.
Both teams entered the game with a 7-6 record, and Maryland likely saw this as an opportunity to secure their first conference win. However, the team’s lack of offensive production from their guards was a significant issue. David Coit, Andre Mills, and Adams combined for just 21 points on 6-of-34 shooting and seven turnovers, which was not the kind of performance expected from the backcourt.
Isaiah Watts was the only other double-digit scorer for Maryland, tallying 11 points with three three-pointers on 4-of-8 shooting. His contributions were important, but they weren’t enough to carry the team to victory.
Upcoming Games and Updates
Maryland will continue its Big Ten schedule with a home matchup against Indiana on Wednesday night. The game is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m., offering another chance for the Terps to bounce back from their recent loss.
In addition to the basketball games, there have been several updates regarding Maryland sports. The football team is facing 10 departures after the start of the transfer portal period. Daniel Wingate has announced his return to the Maryland football program, while Illinois handed No. 7 Maryland its first loss of the season.
