Morgan Scalley has officially appointed a new offensive coordinator for the Utah football team. Kevin McGiven, who previously led the Utah State offense during his third tenure in Logan, will now be responsible for overseeing the Utes’ offensive strategy under Scalley’s first full season as head coach.

McGiven brings a wealth of experience to the role, with 25 years of coaching under his belt, including 17 seasons spent coordinating NCAA Division I offenses. A native of Orem, he attended Mountain View High School before embarking on his coaching journey.

“Kevin is one of the brightest offensive minds in college football,” Scalley said. “His ability to innovate and adapt to different personnel is extremely impressive, and he brings a scheme and mentality that are perfect for the playmakers we have here at Utah. Ute Nation is going to love this guy!”

Colton Swan has been named the new defensive coordinator for the Utah football team. This move comes after Jason Beck left Utah to join former head coach Kyle Whittingham at Michigan, where he will serve as the offensive coordinator.

During McGiven’s time at Utah State, the Aggies’ offense produced strong results, including helping quarterback Bryson Barnes become one of six FBS players in 2025 with at least 2,500 passing yards and 700 rushing yards.

I sincerely thank Mark Harlan and Coach Scalley for giving me this opportunity and putting their faith and trust in me to lead our offense. My wife and I are excited to get down there, and I look forward to continuing and building upon the success and tradition of Utah football.”

Utah State ranked second in the Mountain West in scoring offense at 31.8 points per game and was third in the conference in both total offense (422.4 ypg) and passing efficiency (147.0). The Aggies were fourth in the MW in passing (251.4 ypg) and fifth in rushing (171.0 ypg).

Before joining Utah State, McGiven spent seven seasons at San José State, where he served as the Spartans’ offensive coordinator for six years. He also spent three seasons at Oregon State, working as the quarterbacks coach in 2015, co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016, and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017.

McGiven also had stints at Montana State and Memphis (2010-11), where he served as the assistant head coach of offense and quarterbacks’ coach.

During his first stint with Utah State in the 2009 season, McGiven significantly improved the Aggies’ offense, moving it from 89th nationally in 2008 to 14th in 2009, averaging 439.3 yards per game.

Prior to the 2009 campaign, McGiven was Weber State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for three seasons, helping the Wildcats win a share of the Big Sky Conference title and advance to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs in 2008.

Jason Beck, who previously held the position of defensive coordinator at Utah for ten seasons, has now left the program to join Whittingham at Michigan.

McGiven began his coaching career in 1998 at Louisiana Tech as a student assistant coach after his playing career was cut short due to an injury. His journey in football has led him to some of the most prestigious roles in collegiate football, and now he is ready to bring his expertise to the University of Utah.

On Friday, Scalley announced Colton Swan as the new defensive coordinator, marking a significant shift in the leadership of the Utes’ defense.
